It's quite hot in Adelaide today, with temperatures about 36 degrees Celsius or so.

As a result (and because lerps are attacking many gum trees), the Koalas get quite thirsty.

We put trays of water out for the local Koalas and this morning outside the back door of my office on a campus on the outskirts of Adelaide this little guy had a long, long drink, keeping his paws wet for that added cool

PS: You know Parents can be cruel sometimes. My dear father who hasn't a lot of hair on his head, when I was a wee child would relate how he lost his hair to a Drop Bear attack. Scared the bejeesus out of us kids for years until...............

 

Wild ones are very vicious demon. There claws are like 3 inch nails. They use them to climb trees extremely quickly. Lovely to look at and the one in Sebs pic must have been pretty dehydrated cause you usually can't get anywhere near that close to them. The heat does knock them around pretty badly.

 

You say "wild ones..." Do people domesticate them? Or is that just too crazy?

 

Sebastionbear: thanks for the drop bear link. It has killed any desire I have to visit down under. Well, unless you can get Crocodile Dundee to guide and protect me. Since he can wrestle twenty foot crocodiles to death he should be able to handle drop bears.

Would peanut butter behind the ears be a reasonable substitute for vegamite? I put some vegamite behind my right ear once to save it for a snack and now can only hear in my left ear.

The word koala comes from the Dharuk gula. Although the vowel /u/ was originally written in the English orthography as "oo" (in spellings such as coola or koolah), it was changed to "oa" possibly due to an error. The word is erroneously said to mean "doesn't drink".

When it very hot Mattson, the Koala will always seek water to drink. Because they're so clumsy on the ground they just don't usually do it during the daylight hours, so people didn't see them drink.
