Thank's for all the replies guys.
Sorry I'm absolutely up to my eyes in it right now, which is why I took it to the garage in the first place. As soon as I clear the decks I'll follow your suggestions, but at least it's running and right now it'll have to wait.
Glad of the opinions though, sounded like BS to me, but wanted your thoughts on it as well.

50/50 says it's coil pack v's broken insulation (running to the cp)
I'll put on pint of the best on the coil pack tho ' ! (Dylan was on it too) so maybe that's
2 pints on the coil pack v's Petes cracked insulation (grounding) is Pete willing to back it up with a pint of JJ (Jungle Juice) ?
We might have to start up a virtual bar tab thread for these kinds of question & answers contests ???? eh ???
For non beer drinkers ..... kaliber or odouls etc would work too !

Sorry to disagree but I think form the sounds of it that it is the head gasket.
They can leak in one direction and the symtoms are not always the same. There are different ways they can fail. They can act like a reed valve passing oil, coolant or compressing in one direction.
(1) Oil to water jacket 1-way <--foamy gray oil in coolant
(2) Water to oil 1-way <--grayish oil due to coolant
(3) Oil to water 2-way <--both the above
(4) Oil to cylinder 1-way <--burning oil out the exhaust
(5) Cylinder to oil 1-way <--oil blowing out the valve cover
(6) Coolant to cylinder 1-way <--steamy exhaust and coolant going down
(7) Cylinder to coolant 1-way <--bubbling coolant and expanded coolant hoses
(8) cylinder to cylinder 2-way <--loss of compression
(9) Cylinder to outside 2-way <--whiffing or hissing noise
The fact that the engine runs differently when warmed up could point to the fact that, due to expansion, the gasket is not making proper seal.
I have had this happen to me more than once.
If it were me, I would do a compression test when the engine is cold and then when hot. If the readings are quite a bit different, I would suspect the head gasket.
