Default OK who's up for a bit of philosophy?

So Mission Control and I have just watched a doco on the Phelps? family from the U.S.. Holy ****e, those people are nutbars of the first order and worthy of a thread of their very own.

Bit I digress.

So their whole religious nutbarness (is that a word?) set off yet another train of thought in my head.

What does Jesus actually do for a job?

I was brought up with the belief that Jesus was the "son of God"

We hear constantly in the news of bad things that happen round the world:

"Drought and Famine in Somalia" - Act of God

"Massive floods in Queensland" - Act of God

"Devastating earthquakes in Christchurch" - Act of God

Are you seeing the pattern here?

I'm getting the picture of some lazy *** teenage son, who doesn't have an actual job, lounging around heaven expecting his Dad to organize everything.

A CBR Biker is riding by the zoo in Washington, DC when he sees a
little girl leaning into the lion's cage. Suddenly, the lion grabs her by
the collar of her jacket and tries to pull her inside to slaughter her,
under the eyes of her screaming parents.

The biker jumps off his CBR, runs to the cage and hits the lion square
on the nose with a powerful punch.

Whimpering from the pain the lion jumps back letting go of the girl,
And the biker brings her to her terrified parents, who thank him endlessly.

A reporter has watched the whole event.

The reporter addressing the CBR rider says, 'Sir, this was the most
gallant and brave thing I've seen a man do in my whole life.'

The CBR rider replies, 'Why, it was nothing, really, the lion was
behind bars. I just saw this little kid in danger and acted as I felt
right.'

The reporter says, 'Well, I'll make sure this won't go unnoticed. I'm a
journalist, you know, and tomorrow's paper will have this story on the
front page... So, what do you do for a living and what political
affiliation do you have?'

The biker replies, 'I'm a U.S. Marine and a Republican'

The journalist leaves.

The following morning the biker buys the paper to see if it indeed
Brings news of his actions, and reads, on the front page:

"U.S. MARINE ASSAULTS AFRICAN IMMIGRANT AND STEALS HIS LUNCH"

...and THAT pretty much sums up the media's approach to the news these
days...

Kiwi, Jesus was the 'Son of God' in the eyes of the Christian church, but his actual profession was a carpenter and they reckon he was in his early thirties when he died.

Well, this is bringing up a bit of sociology into the mix, but Max Weber mentioned once that the entirety of western culture has developed the work ethic that it does because of Protestantism. That is to say that certain interpretations of the Bible are what make us think that we only have value (to god) by the "work" that we do. And of course, I'm not saying work=labor because let's face it, clergy members do little if any actual "labor".

So going from that, since Jesus came before the Bible wars, maybe Jesus doesn't actually have any job as we'd interpret it?

IMO, if anything, Jesus' official job title should be "diplomat". They interpret and negotiate for a body or party in an attempt to bring understanding and peace, in a few years all hell breaks loose because their job is in fact useless.

As far as this god nonsense, if in fact a God exists and we had even an inkling of what/who he is and what he wanted, our greed has long since buried any impartial understanding of any of that. I.E. Supposedly it was the one and only "God's will" to rape countries for natural resources, but I digress....
