I have an ignition switch for my Honda CBR 1000F 1990 in the kitchen here. It is remove from the bike. The lower part with the electric switch and cables is still on the bike and I am in the kitchen trying to open the metal lock cylinder. The aim is to finish the two keys already made for the gas tank and helmet lock, so that they also work in the ignition lock. As I understand it, the other two locks are less complex so I need to get to the lock cylinder in order to check which key I need (either by finding a lock code there or by visually inspecting the loch cylinder after inserting the key).

No, I don't want to buy I Chinese replacement switch. No, I don't have a working key. Yes I am the owner of this bike. No, I am not asking you for any information that may help anyone stealing motorcycles. But I do need your help:

Question: How do I remove the black plastic cover over the clock cylinder? I have tried, but I can't figure it out. If you have done this, I would be happy to hear your advice.

There should be a key code on the part, something like 'D05'.

 

Likewise in a similar situation to you, I attempted this before a few years back and ended up at a dead end if I remember. I managed to strip further than your images but distorted the plastics in doing so.
All to no avail in the end as I could not assure what I could rebuild from the dissembled parts could be reliably used.
You might have more skill and patience than me so best of luck mate.

So I already got the code from the gas tank lock, but the locksmith said that it was not a correct key code (theee characters and start with a “9” and then two letters (the format is 9XX, where X are letters. Now I see that exact same code on the ignition switch lock. So it seems to be a lock code in some way?

If I recall correctly, I have read in some documentation that the key codes should have four series starting with either A, B, C or D (e.g. AXX).

Any thoughts? Does any member know of a locksmith that can make a key from this kind of code? (9XX)

 

I don't remember if this is the guy I used. I do remember that it's important to let him know what side the cutout is on. (there are left and right side blanks) So you can have a right D05 or a left D05. My '94 CBR1000F is in that format where my CX500 is 813 (no letters).

Hi Guys,

Thank you for all the help. So I decided to cut the plastic open on the lock cylinder with a sharp knife. Since the weather made the plastic hard and fragile, it was not too difficult. So I cut around the cylinder leaving the last 20 mm or so of the top of the plastic (so that you can pout it back above the lock (the key insert) and it looks the same.

After having removed the plastic, you will be a blank bolt which holds the cylinder inside the lock. I drilled a hole next to it (3-5mm drill and 3mm down) to I could get a hold of it with a knife and take it out. After this, it was easy to extract the lock cylinder itself from the lock. There is a spring inside - remember to out it back.

Once you get the lock cylinder out - it is easy to understand what your key will need to look like to turn the cylinder (anything sticking out from the cylinder will stop it from opening. There were 8 wafers to sort out.).

Thinking bout this now afterwards maybe I could have just remove 4 wafers to make the key less complex. But this is how I did it:

I had a lock smith create a key to fit the simpler gas tank lock (you can lock pick it in less than 5 minutes with a lock pick ans no experience (I did). That key, based on a key blank called SILICA HON 31RP, only solved 4 of the 8 wafers on the ignition lock. So when I put this key into the ignition lock (I had to file of some parts to get it in fully), I saw that the last (bottom) four wafter where already in place for the lock to open. Then there were the other 4. Only two of them needed some attention with a small metal needle file (I am not sure if the tools are called files in English but it is what you would use to take away metal from a key to make it correct manually). So I just filed a bit there the two misplaces wafters were - on both side of the symmetric key. And BOOOOOOOOOOM. It worked.

I basically followed this guys youtube video:
Then I out everything back on the CBR! BOOOOOOM - Engine on!

FAQ:
1) Can I remove the ignition lock? Yes, I used https://www.biltema.se/bil---mc/bilv...-st-2000020870 to open the bolts. It was NOT easy but it eventually worked.
2) Can I remove the ignition lock even if the steering lock is locked? Yes, without breaking it. Just unscrew and start yanking the steering and lock a bit.
3) Can I remove the plastic and get to the lock cylinder to create a key without breaking it? Yes, use method described above.
4) What key blank do I need for a Honda Car 1990 1000f For example SILICA HON 31RP works for all three locks. Or get a KAWASAKI KAW-7P - it works fine and it is longer. For my CBR the original key seems to be Honda number 35121-KW3-771. I have not tried cutting these original blanks - they do look a little but short but I guess they should work since they are original (the 35122 look the same but is mirrored and does not work for my lock but work for some other models, other years).
