Rear brake mod for an 89 CBR 1000 F

Hi All,
Just a quick post to let anyone who has an `89 era CBR 1000 f that if Your rear calliper seizes as mine did and you are unable to get an `89 replacement You can use the rear calliper off a `96/97 model by just swapping out the `89 disc for a `96/97 one,
just finished the mod on my `89 and it`s working a dream

Hi Mike - nice looking bike you got there!

Good to know! Interesting to see how the 89-92 is much larger (than the 93-99) in Outside Diameter and Thickness.

Cheers Naga,
I have always loved the cbr I picked up the 89 for 700 euro a couple of years ago and refurbished the bodywork and gave her a fresh paintjob, bought the 96 a year later for 950 euro and use it as a daily runner in all weathers and she`s never let me down.
I suppose the fact the 89 had a single pot calliper meant it required a larger area to get the required braking force, i`ve uploade a couple of pics to my album of the finished job if you want to check them out click here
My `89 CBR 1000 fk . I dont know why the pics are sideways, the were properly oriented in my photo album :{{
I think the next job will be to swap out the front end for the 97 front end i have in the garage, so i`ll have better brakes all round.
Ride safe Guy`s
Mike

The '97 was linked so you have to marry the pistons first. There are about 4 or 5 different piston sizes on the fronts so remember where you pull them from when you drill the pipe.

I have 96 so i know bout that Tim but thanks, there`s a good write up here about delinking a linked brake system, i think i`ll do that to my 96 as well as the brakes keep going spongy.
I didnt drill out the rear calliper to use all 3 pots, I just put a blanking screw into the feed hole for the middle pot and made sure it was pushed all the way home into the piston, and I also used the original rear brake line

Yeah I think personally I'd be using all three pistons against the brake pad
just a personal preference is all - nice to know it worked out well for you.

So would this be the F3 model?

IDoDirt Jun 17, 2022 12:46 PM

The F3 is a CBR600 made from 1995 - 1998. The brake system being discussed here is for the 1993 -1996 CBR1000F for the US, if that is what you were asking.
