its funny this came up, i was just about to break mine yesterday when my garage wouldnt open, i already asked my apts for another one, but they just kind of brush me off. maybe if i wire it myself it would actually work. only works when i hit it on something, literally.

I thought of the same thing and did not want to drill anything so I went and got a key chain remote.

Check it out. All you have to do is program it. Most are as simple as pressing the "learn" button on the opener and the button on the remote. Works just like the big ones.

I think it's a cool project, but I've always just kept my garage door remote in the chest pocket of my riding jacket, with the button facing outward. After a few uses, I memorized exactly where on my chest I need to press. So I pull up, push the spot on my chest and door opens--no concern for security, since the remote is always with me!

For those who would like to do this without drilling holes in the fairing, here is one easy mod. A normally open magnetic switch, one like is used on doors and windows can be glued to the underside of the fairing in a convenient place. A really small rare-earth magnet on a detachable keychain can be used to trigger the switch. All nice and concealed with no holes in the fairing.
Moving the LED to be seen is a bit unnecessary. IMHO not worth a hole in the fairing.

I just took a mini remote and taped it to the back of my gauge cluster. You can't see it and all I have to do is stick my finger back there topress the button...Project took about 1 to finish with no drilling, cutting, soldering or time...

My garage door opener is connected to my horn circuit. I have a how-to about three pages in.

Tacoma: That was a good write up. I'm just not technically inclined to do stuff, so I go the cheezy route...
