Default Wrenched: A virgin no more

i finally got the chance to get closer with my bike last night, having just received my new gregg's customs flushmounts, i was excited. The story goes something like this:

So I get home after work and having looked a copy of the service manual on hand I began taking my fairings off, starting with the lower one. Then realized my allen keys couldn't reach this one bolt, so of to the shops i go. Got the suitable tools and was back at it around 8pm. I had no idea it would be so time consuming, it was fun and a pain in the *** at the same time, all i wanted to do was install the flushmounts and some new headlights.

Would it have been possible to remove the upper fairing without removing the lower and the inner-lower fairings. I just followed the service manual instruction as to not screw something up. Light in my girfriends garage wasn't very good, so i was using her car lights as backup, i then decided to turn her car off since the noise was starting to get to me. Needless to say time flew by and the next thing i notice is her lights are getting dimmer. I was like "Oh ****" she had just got a new battery and i knew she would kill me. I killed the battery, and she was cool with it at first, i think she felt sorry for me sitting in the heat and getting crawled on by bugs all night. Thankfully the battery charged a couple of hours later and the car was able to start. So anyway, i was able to install the flushmounts and the new bulbs. The flushmount instructions said something about 3 wires of which i only need two but my bike only had two which saved me figuring out what's what. Installation was pretty straight forward and went without a hitch, putting everything back together was such a bitch (can i say bitch in here?) and i recommend lots of light when you're doing this which is something i was missing.

So by around 1:20am i had put all my fairings back on and couldn't be f*cked to screw in the last 10 screws because i couldn't see sh*t. So i had a shower and went to bed. The saga will continue this evening after work.

Anyone else care to share there "first" experience. Sorry if i babbled just got too work and am seriously in need of sleep. Mods, feel free to move this if its not in the appropriate section.

Peace,
TooL

Nice work mate, always a good feeling when you`ve acheived some work yourself. I find the fairing take the longest of any job, only one thing for it i think, get quick release items like racing fairings, but i`ve not got round to it yet.

yeah it felt great, but having broken my back three years ago it was so sore by the time i was finished. I'm still aching as we speak. Thing i'm wondering about though is since i installed the flushmounts my blinkers are flashing so fast compared to how they were when they were stock. Its like the blnking speed doubled. I don't mind it though just wonder what might have caused this. Racing fairings? are those like the ones hotbodies makes? any recommendations?

Thanks,
TooL

The flush mounts should have come with a type of Fuse connected to one of the wires... this acts as a capacitor (for lack of better terminology) which slows the blinking. It isn't necessary, but without it the lights will blink much faster. Installing my rear fender eliminator kit and installing ym front flush mounts was also my first project on the bike and definately took a good amount of time, especially because ti was the first time I had removed any of the fairings or really gotten down to the nuts and bolts with the bike. I managed to undo the side fairirngs, and then was able to loosen up the fornt fairings, which allowed me to oull them back to access the wires, bolts, etc. Needless to say I've done a good amount of other work on the bike since then, and have become extremely efficient in removing those fairings !

I received with the flushmounts these cylindrical looking connectors but didn't bother with them since there were 4 wires and i only received 3 connectors might those be what you're talking about?.

I can't be bothered to open it up again but i'll save them for the next time i do it.

yeah there `resistors` they slow the flash rate down.

Its not the actual fairing i ment, you can get replacement fasteners that you just turn to undo by hand instead of the allen bolt sets that come as standard, normally about £50 or $80ish for a full set for the whole bike.

First off..Greggs customs are a two wire affair (no running light) and I reccomend cutting the connector of your stock turn signal so you d onot have to butcher your wire harness. If you disconect the fairing lowers from the upper, then disconnect the bolts holding the upper fairing stay to the mainframe and any connectors holding the ram air tubes, headlights wires ect ( you do have a F4i right??) the entire upper fairing can be removed with windshield, mirrors ect... and brought in the house.
You were probally having trouble since the ram air tubes are in the way making your workspace very limited.
Now you can place it on your bed or couch ( to keep from scratching it) turn it upside down giving you all the room you need to work on it

Hey mr. limpz,

I did exaclty like you're suggesting but i didn't have the luxury of working on a couch. I removed the lower fairing, inner-lower fairing and the top fairing and worked with it, but yeah those ram air tubes are a bitch, especially when i was reconnecting the upper fairing and had minimal light to work with.

Yeah, Gregg's flushmounts are 2 wires per indicator but i had only received 3 connector thinga ma jigs when i believe there should have been 4. So i ended up connecting them without. Yeah me bike tis an F4i tis.

I just reconnected the last few screws and my inner lower fairing and just gave the bike a wash. Will take her out after dinner and play with my new toys.
