Rather what are they for? I understand the concept of a ram air duct but more specifically those chambers??? I see them used all the way up to the F4i but after that the rr's don't. Thanks for indulging my curiosity and desire to understand what goes through engineers heads when they design bikes.

 

My guess would be some type of resonator box.

 

They are to prevent resonance noises. Many cars have them too.

 

I think they might be little boxes that act to reduce resonance in the intake.

But they could be air chambers that somehow reduce noise pollution by providing a sound dampening effect on the intake.

 

Well there goes my guess that they were secret compartments for smuggling your stash across international borders

 

Or.....they may be there to keep the intake air from making strange noises.

 

Shhhh.....

Or loud noises.

 

So why were they removed once the rr came out?
