Default What has a high specific gravity other than mercury?

I'm trying to make manometers for my bike that aren't u-tube, but with water or oil it would take over 6 feet of height, and that's if it is only pulling in three pounds, which I think it's more. I tried looking up the new manometer fluid, but that's barely above one, so it'd be the same thing. Anyone have any suggestions? Mercury is completely out as it's basically illegal to get.

lead at 600 Kelvin should do nicely.

seriously tho, maybe iodine (not as cheap as water .

iodine isn't a liquid at any realistic temperatures, thanks for trying though.

I used an aluminum t-square with tubing, used transimission fluid. Easy to see and wont cause any accidental damage.

I'm not seeing how it won't get sucked into the carbs, transmission fluid is lighter than water.

Im not sure what your testing, but most vacuum from an engine is not constant, but it pulses. Depending on what your testing, the vacuum will pull, then drop, then pull then drop.... so it will only pull so high before it drops, then pull again. It won't go any higher. So a heavy oil really isnt needed in some cases. Sorry, I'm not really sure what your doing, so its a little vague and may not be helpful at all..

but, I found this link for manometer oil..... not sure if it will work for you or not..Its for a specific manometer, but Im sure they are all about the same.

I am just doing a carb synch. So I can just use regular motor oil and not have a rediculous height since the vacuum is not constant? How high was it pulling up the oil in each tube when you did it, and did it have four separate tubes?

Acids are heavy.... LOL..
Phosphoric is about 14-15lbs per gal @ 75% while water is 8.34lbs.
I have a 55gal drum of phos acid, and I still remember how hard it was to wrestle the dam thing...

In all seriousness, though, I'd just buy a morgan carbtune and be done with it. I believe the exchange rate is lookin' better these days than when I bought mine.

Then when you're done with it (and think you'll never own another carbed bike) just sell the dam thing on Ebay.
If you bought it and sold it on Ebay tomorrow, you'd prolly be out like $20 or something (maybe less).
Or you could maybe borrow one from a friend?

Just use color pretty water but put a restriction in each line to keep the pulses down. If a little bit of water gets sucked in accidentally it won't hurt anything -- will actually clean things up a bit. Still, ya never wanna over do it cause hydra locking the thing will turn your connecting rod into a banana.
