What happened to DOT 4 brake fluid?
I swung by Pepboys to pick up some brake cleaner and brake fluid. Planning to flush, bleed and deglaze the brakes this weekend. So on the fluid isle I'm looking for DOT 4 fluid and... nada. DOT 3 and this stuff
http://www.castrol.com/liveassets/bp...2oz_87x200.jpg. Says it exceeds DOT 3 and DOT 4 specs. But there was no plain ole DOT 4 on the shelves. Something change? |
Ive never seen specific DOT4. All I ever see it synthetic stuff that says is good for DOT3 or DOT4 use. I flushed and refilled mine with valvoline brand that meets DOT3 and 4 requirements and no problems.

Some places still carry dot 4. But most have made their fluid compatible with 3 and 4, so there is no need for specific fluids. There's not much of a reason to carry two seperate types when one does both.
I did recently purchase some dot 4 from autozone though.. |
Just make sure it is not DOT 5 (silicone based). DOT 5.1 is OK, it's composition is compatible with 3 and 4.
|
if it says it exceeds standards why not use it?
|
Castrol is DOT4.. DOT4 exceeds 3.. as was said.. you dont want DOT5.

Walmart still carries Prestone DOT4.
|
Autozone carries what they call dot 3/4.

Welp here's why I was looking for brake fluid
Attachment 55939 No, that's not a urine sample. That was my old brake fluid. Attachment 55940 The rear pads. Flushed the old brake fluid, took my DA sander to the pads with 80 grit paper, put in new brake fluid, bled the brakes and cleaned the discs. Attachment 55941 Went around the block to make sure everything was good and holy chit. Brakes tried to toss me over the bars, lock both tires and stoppie :p |
