water under gas cap!!!

water under gas cap!!!
I got myself a 97 f3 a month ago......love it.
Washed it for the first time a few days ago. When I last went for gas, the area under the gas cap was full of water.
I realize the cap has a rubber gasket that covers the fill area of the tank, but was worried about water getting into the fuel system anyway. The bike is new to me and I'm not real used to its feel yet, but I thought I might have noticed a kind of sputter in the accelration....I could just be paranoid though.
Any thoughts?....
I cant beleive that the gas cap assembly isnt designed to be water-tight...has anyone else had this happen?
Thanks for any help you can offer...
Cheers

RE: water under gas cap!!!
Yeah their supposed to be water tight, but like everything....How much water pressure did you use?
When you say inder the gas tank lid, do you mean the actually the lid (like condensation) or the hollow lip around it< cause thats got and over fill pipe on it, which would/should have drained any water away.
All petrol tanks get water (via condensation & from petrol stations, trust me on that one) in them.
You could be just paranoid, at least thats wot everyones saying about you.

RE: water under gas cap!!!
thanks for the response pacemaker...
yea, when I said water under the lid....I mean the hollow lip around the opening to the tank was almost full of water.
Since the bike was on the sidestand when I was refueling, the water was pooled to the left, and almost at the height of the filler opening... a few ounces I guess....
it had been on its sidestand for a day since I washed it...and then only had about a 2 minute drive to gas station....is overfill pipe on right hand side?.....maybe not enuf time for water to have all drained out?
As far as water pressure...I rinsed it off with a garden hose...my thumb over the end to give a bit of pressure...
Maybe I underestimate how much pressure thumb on hose is producing...I was going to buy a pressure washer to strip the flaking painf offthe old facia onmy house....maybe I wont need it after all....LOL
thanks for the response, I'll have a look for the overfill pipe... and be more careful next wash....

RE: water under gas cap!!!
don't sweet it....that area has a drain as mentioned and will empty out with soem riding or evaporate....the cap itself has a rather elaborate breather system of its own as well, and the seal between the tank fill hole lip and the cap is spring loaded ..... so the effort it takes to push it closed is creating a significant seal.
I would make sure to have the metal protector over the key hole close, and not use a pressure washer pointed right at it or anything...but just a garden hose is nothing to worry about.
