Tire on 96 900RR
Got a quick question for you guys. The rear tire on my bike is wearing out. After a group ride tonight with a bunch of friends, I noticed the threads showing on my tire. On a tight budget and will have to wait a few weeks to have the money to buy a new tire.
My question is, a friend has a Pirelli tire from his bike that is newer than mine and has some life left. He switched to a different size. He said I could borrow the tire until I have the funds to buy a new one, which is great. Only problem is, the tire is a 190 and my 96 calls for 180, stock. How much, if at all, will this affect my bikes handling? Is it OK to use for a temp replacement to be able to keep riding, rather than park it for a few weeks? My buddy thinks I should be fine. he said the one difference will be that the 190 on my rim will create a bit more of an arch than the 180 would. What do you guys think?

On a worn tire with 'some' life left , who knows. Could have any profile now, probably wear that would make the profile change more extreme.
Its not a dramatic difference but it depends on rim size as the 190 on a narrow rim (your bike) will have a different profile than on a wider rim (his bike?).
Or you doing the tire change yourself ? Just guessing you wouldnt be paying to have tires swapped (eventually twice) if your were trying to save money.

We will be doing the change ourselves. Both times.

If the tire on your current bike, worn to a point that steel carcus is visible, I'll say you won't feel any different...likely his may feel a bit better since life left.....beats running on what you have now.
One thing is the 55? May rub your battery tray is suspension set up soft, or hitting a speed bump....our stock calls for 180/55 or 190/50....can say for sure...
I would wait until pay day, meanwhile strip bike and do a thorough cleaning....

The tire is a 190/55/17. It was a spare he had from another bike. He has the new BMW 1KRR and the profile tire he uses is 190/50/17. The rim the tire came off was a little wider than mine, that's why I am posting this. Will it affect my bike TOO much to use? Or should I be ok until pay day?

I guess my opinion, which I understand your not asking for , is I wouldnt go thru all the trouble of swapping tires just till payday. But obviously thats just me.
To just be able to get around on his old tire, you'll probably be just fine.

Lol...+1....if I had a extra spare and my buddy needs one....five finger discount. Here you go bud....buy me lunch sometimes....why only temp.
Definately not TOO much to use.

It was his suggestion to try the spare he has in the first place, so I could keep riding with him, until I have the money for a new tire. Just a couple of weeks until I get paid again. He doesn't mind changing tires, he likes working on stuff.
