I was told by a shop that the metal plates aren't needed unless they are worn.

Have you priced a clutch kit from Barnett? They usually include both the friction and pressure plates as well as the springs. I have used both the kevlar and carbon fiber friction plates.

Where you able to find all the pieces? It looks like you did but kinda hard to tell if the all fit together. Just saying this becuase you don't want any of that getting into something if shouldn't. If it appears that you're missing some of the fibers, check in the oil pan. You should be able to look down into the oil pan and see if there is anything that shouldn't be there. To see in areas that you can't see, use one of those small mirrors on the end of an extension.

You can get away with the friction plates only if the pressure plates are flat. My pressure plates had been hot enough to "blue" in patches, but otherwise seemed flat.
I didn't take the chance that they were okay and replaced them.
Which ever way you go, check the clutch manufacturers oil recomendations to see what kind of oil works best with their product. That was my mistake with a Barnett clutch kit in the past, I didn't do the reasearch and used the wrong oil(damned wearguard). My bad not the clutch. By the time I realized my mistake the clutch was saturated with friction reducing additives from the oil and was slipping again.
