Default Sudden loud engine noise

Firstly, hello all, I'm new here (well, long time lurker) - do I stand up and tell the class a little bit about myself? I shall post an introductory bit in the new members section as soon as I finish this post..

I was hoping that somebody could lend me their ears and tell me if they've heard anything like this before/have any guesses as to what it might be?

Was unprovoked - on the way home from work, doing about 25, not accelerating/braking hard, just suddenly came on. Nursed it the half mile home, kinda felt like less power, but that could've just been me being cautious with the throttle. Got home, turned it off, had a look around, couldn't see anything too obvious, started up again after an hour or so, no change - noise still there.

Help?!

My first port of call would be the Cam Chain Tensioner.

Reason - it seems to go quieter when you apply a little throttle and the crank pulls the chain tighter.

Yes - they can go all of a sudden.

EDIT - it may help more if you post the year/model of the bike rather than just cbr600

Default Update

Hi Dean0, thanks so much for your response.

CCT was the conclusion I was veering towards after trawling the internets. I ain't got any firsthand experience with engine issues though, so it's tough for me to say 'it sounds similar to that guys bike, and that was that'.

A bit more info - it's a '95 CBR 600 F3 (FS), I've had it for about a year.

You're right, it gets quieter at higher revs. Really loud at idle, bit quieter with a kind of 'whirr/whoosh' noise as you go up through the revs until about 5k where it pretty much vanishes (might still be there but can't hear it over the engine).

Didn't rev it up past 5k when getting it home, hence why I didn't notice that tl now, but after reading up, decided to try turning the CCT screw (made no odds, but I don't know if the screwdriver was getting in right), and that's when I noticed it was alright above 5k.

Is there a way to confirm the diagnosis of CCT? Is it an expensive garage job, or is it easy enough to do myself? (Have read varying reports of having to drop engine block to get it out, etc)

Thanks again!

It's a pretty simple repair.

Mine's a touch noisy on initial startup. I think it's been replaced or fiddled with at least once. They go early and often on these motors and aren't really hard to fix or to buy.

Thanks Cookml22 & FOGeologist. I had a look for a CCT sticky in the f3 bit, but couldn't see one. Think I'll probably take it to a garage and see what they quote me, but if it's extortionate I might have a go myself...

And now I see that there's an entire section for stickies. Duh!

Apologies, haven't quite gotten the format of the site yet! Was looking at the top of the threads.

Thanks!

Evenin' all.

So I had a chance this evening to get the plastics off and jam a screwdriver in there - nothing happened when i extended it, but when I extended it and then gave it a wee extra push... bingo, noise stopped. At a guess, I reckon the spring's completely gone as there was no resistance either way. Will crack it open once I've replaced it and have a look-see!

There is nothing more relieving than giving a wee push and hearing what sounds like a dying engine suddenly heal! (however with the fact that I had to extend it all the way and then push further I probably should keep my fingers slightly crossed that the chain isn't a bit stretched - think that'd be a garage job and a £££ one at that)

New part from David Silver on it's way for just short of £80, will hopefully get it in time for the weekend, and I'm due an oil+filter change too (my first attempt) so looks like I'll have a busy saturday morning!

Will let y'all know how it goes, if I can remember I'll take some videos/photos so you can all have a laugh at how a newbie manages.

Thanks for the advice!

Sounds like you're on your way. Do you have a camera? Know how to document the work? Kindly do so. I am thinking of doing this to my bike too, although it doesn't seem too far gone yet.
