Unhappy Stator Cover Issues

Hi,

I had a low speed slip up on my F4I (2006) and scratched through the stator cover just enough to leak a couple of drops of oil. I ordered a new chrome one through eBay and it arrived today but now I have 'issues'.

There are 4 5mm hex head bolts that hold the coil inside the cover and on the new cover, only 3 of these line up. Will the bike be ok to only have 3 bolts holding this coil or am I best to wait for another 2 weeks with no transport while they ship a replacement?

Thanks in advance.

Adam

I'd wait for a replacement if they sent the wrong cover.

However, make sure the orientation of the stator is correct. Sometimes, the bolt holes will be offset so you can't put the stator on in the wrong orientation.

Here are 2 pics of it.

Everything else with the cover is perfect.

Update from the eBay twit I got the stator cover from. They have no more in stock and it will be 6 weeks till they have more in. So I thought I would bite the bullet and buy OEM but that will be 3 weeks and almost triple the price!

If the coil thing will not cause issues with only 3 bolts then I will have to live with it as my bike is my only transport and I start my new job next week.

Not to be a twit myself, but there should be 5 bolt holes in the cover. Is there a possiblilty you have one of the bolts in the wrong 5th hole?

As for riding it with only 3 bolts. I still wouldn't. the magnet is pulling on that pretty hard, and the possiblilty of the stator deforming is pretty high. It may work without any problems, but its not something I would want to risk. Then be out that much more money for replacing a flywheel and stator. They run pretty close together, so any deformation could have drastic problems.

If you really depend on the bike for your new job. Is there a way you can patch up your old stator to last a few weeks? If its not too banged up, theres not much pressure behind it, so just about any two part epoxy should last a couple of weeks. it will be ugly, but it would probably get you by. Just clean both the inside and outside, apply the epoxy to both sides so it bonds to itself and to the case. I'd go a few layers of the stuff though. the last thing you want a bike is an oil leak.

If thats not something that is possible, I'd buy a used one on ebay. Even a rashed one that doesn't leak would be ok for now. And, they shouldn't cost too much either..

by the way, what bike do you have?

Default Argh

It is a 2006 F4I.

The old stator cover only had 4 bolts and 4 bolt holes holding the coil thing in and so does the new one, just that one of them does not line up.

The old case is scratched enough that there is a hairline crack that leaks the oil, I thought about patching it but I thought the heat and oil pressure would be too high for it.

Most autoparts stores carry a product called "ALLWELD", It comes in a clear plastic tube. It's a 2 part product, you cut off amount to use and roll it or nead it in your hands to mix and once applyed it hardens to steel specs.. and is grindable.(Just like JBWeld but its a hard paste) Make sure your stator is clean before applying. I have used this on gas tank leaks as a temporary and permanent fix and it works great.

Hope this helps.

JB Weld it and be very vigilant until you get the one from Ebay, imo.
