I heard that they're supposed to grip the ground better when you crash, therefore keeping your bike from sliding very far.....kinda like mountain climbers do with their pickaxe......

haha this is awsome, My guess is the only people who are putting these on there bikes are the guys who dont ride to hard, they just like taking there bike out on a friday evening and hanging out at the starbucks to show it off. I could very easily be wrong but thats the only people I have seen with them.
