sounds like a rectifier problem same thing happend to my friends gsxr check the connections to it from the stator and to the bike they might be melted or burned a little if so then you know the problem fun part is figureing out why, start checkin grounds and fuses and wires in general, check voltage comeing out of the stator, have the battery checked at a local shop make sure it is up to par and wasnt damaged, hopefully it didnt melt the main harness that would suck. if everything checks out ok then its prob just a blown rectifier, hope you can get it figured out.

A little more information on what bike you have would help a bit.

Describe the sensation of the loss of power. Was it like running out of fuel, or like someone killed the ignition with the key ?

well the best descriptioni can give is when i was riding...it puttered intermitenly for a bit....(this is how i knew i was going down) so i tried revving it up so i can get more speed.....and then i pulled my throttle back...nothing happened.then it took me forever just to get it running again....it happend about 4 times in about 4 miles. could be a fuel, carb,or spark...i just dont know .....i torn it apart yesterday to see it it was something obvius...screwed around with it all day..went to ride it around the block and same thing...so im just going to have my bike tech work on it.

Did you have any problems getting it to turn over when you were trying to start it ? Any symptoms like a dead or weak battery ?

nope. my starter will turn...all my electrical is good. infact the first thing i did was take my fender off and check my rectifier ( because i recently installed a new one and i wanted to check my connections )....rectifier wasnt even hot yet.this is how i know its either a fuel or carb problem.....and if its a carb problem, then its beyond my relm, becasue im a car/EFI guy.....i dont understand/know anything about carbs...but nonetheless my bike tech came to pick it up this morning, so after he troubleshoots it ill keep you updated
