RK 520 CHAIN AND SPROCKET KIT ???
I have a 97 CBR 900, and I need to replace my chain...
I'm thinking on getting a RK 520 and -1 in the front. What do you guys think?
My riding is most in the hwy, I commute with the bike, so I don't want to lose much top speed.
I seen some threads that some of you go -1 front and +2 in the rear, what's you top speed?

on my recently departed 929
, i had the -1/+2 and i ran it up pretty good a few times. around 140. this was not the top speed (it had some left) but i can say that 150 shouldn't have been an issue. so unless you frequently commute at 150, the -1 will be perfectly fine. and the added acceleration will make you wonder why you didn't do it sooner.
and that kit is not a great deal. it's actually around retail price. i never priced it for a 900rr but i think i paid $157 for the kit from dennis kirk. and they have better customer service than probably anyone on ebay. just a thought.

I have this exact kit and yes, I wondered why I didnt do this earlier. I have a 99 900RR and it is the way to go. Saves 1.5lbs of rotational mass too. Mostly from the aluminum rear sprocket. Very good investment though and you WILL notice even just -1. I can hold off my brother's 01 Gix1K a little longer now. Not a lot of added RPM, top speed, dont know. Fastest I saw with stock gearing was 176 according to speedo at BIR. Now, havent been to BIR since, but I would be shocked if it wouldnt pull an honest 150 if you needed to. Do it, you wont be sorry.

If I go -1 in the front and +2 in the back, can I still get to 160?
I know it sounds stupid to do 180, but at the time I comute, in the empty hwys, no one around, it's easy to get there... I would like to do a least 160. Just for the record I ride with the flow of the traffic...
Sometimes I drag race, so I would like that quick acceleration, but I guess if I want to gain, I'll have to lose something...

After research and changing a .xls sheet I found in other thread, here is what I got:
My bike is a Japanese model so my sproket sizes are:
16 F 42 R
15 F 45 R the speed at 11650 rpm would be 161
15 F 42 R the speed at 11650 rpm would be 172
I think I'm going with -1 F +3 R
If some one wants to see this great .xls sheet let me know and I'll e-mail it
Here are the Internal Gear Ratio for a 96/97 CBR 900 RR
1 ------ 2 ------ 3 ------ 4 ------ 5 ------ 6
2.727 - 1.933 - 1.600 - 1.400 - 1.263 - 1.167

As long as you're realistic about your top speed you should be fine. The xl sheet shows theoretical mph for a given rpm. That doesnt take into account wind drag, tire slip, etc. No, you'r bike wont do 172 with a -1 sprocket in front. Wouldnt do it stock so that's not going to make it better. And by regearing it, you do know that your speedo will be miles off with -1 +3 right? It might say 170, but you are no where near that. -1+3 will probably net you anywhere from 145-155 for a top speed. Come on now, how often do you really do that? If you dont believe me about top speed exagerations, go read the top speed post in the 600 section where they think their 600 is clearing 165. Funny stuff. Again, regear it, you'll love it.

I'm going to go -1 F + 3 R

Where is a good place to buy that kit?
Thanks

Same as above.

Pretty cheap and easy to install. My next addition. The faster your moving the more exaggerated the speedometer will indicate. I am running an RK chain and sprocket kit and the 520 aswell.
