Default Replace Voltage regulator??

Hey folks. It looks like Colorado winter has set in and I am going to start my to-do list for my 93 1000F. I keep running across conversations that lead me to believe that I should replace the stock regulator while I have the covers off. Some of the stories are that this quits suddenly ,no warning, sometimes burning other components as it goes. I will generally be quite a ways from home on my rides and would prefer not to let this happen . Any advice on this ? And is there an aftermarket item that works better than what I would get from Honda?
Thanx !!

I fitted a replacement unit from Electrex in the UK when my reg/rec went south.
It has a huge heatsink attached but still fits where the old one sits. Excellent service, and they come with a 1 year guarantee which is more than you'll get from Honda (no guarantee on electrical parts !)
We have really hot weather here (up to 48C) and I couldn't be happier with the replacement.
Oh it also charges from around 1400RPM which the stock unit won't do under around 3000RPM.
Much cheaper than the Honda unit too.

Thanx Shadow ...It all sounds good to me, I will check them out and replace it during my winter run through. The bike runs good, but this summer I replaced the battery, after the bike wont start. Hot day ,long run and I had stopped for fuel. Poured cold water in an empty battery and it started right up and got me home.(I had bought the water to drink and just happened to have it) No problems since, but if it' a part that goes bad with the results it can have, probably worth the investment.
