Default R/R is bad....

So it turns out that my R/R is bad. Here's my results. 13.69v when bike is off on battery terminals. 18.56/18.33v when bike is running. Sounds like both of these is an R/R issue. Now that I know I need a new one, any specific ones you suggest? Looking for something not terribly expensive, but obviously not the cheapest or oem. Thanks guys.

Hows this one?

I have read some bad reviews on those r/r's. I don't have any actual experience
with them, however. So take it with a grain of salt.

The NEW oem works fine (It looks just like the one you linked). So if the
price is right, it's worthy of consideration.

A lot of CBR owners have turned to GSXR's for their voltage needs. If you find a
990+ series part-out, that's a source, as well.

Personally? I bit-the-bullet, and coughed up the change for an Electrosport.
I havn't read a single bad review of their products. It's a massive chunk of
finned-metal and uses 10-guage wire for the hook-up. What's not to like about
that? ;-)

Hope this does some good, Ern

HMMMM.... So I may have figured out what the heck is wrong with my CBR 900RR (94). Of course it sounds like a bad R/R, but infact it might be just fine after all. It was replaced before I got it. Last owner of course had charging issues. Here are two pictures of the R/R.

As you may notice, the connector is upside down on the blasted thing. Has minor crack, but I don't feel like it hurts anything. So here is my question. I have a manual for a 96 cbr900 and it should be about the same. It shows where the rectifier is and how to change it, but does not state where the cables need to go exactly. So, I know the three yellow wires (in my case) go on the bottom three prongs. But I dont know which is which for my Red/White (+) and Green (-) wires need to connect. (In my case) the top left or the top right? Any help with this would be AMAZING! Im thinking that the rectifier isn't working correctly because it's plugged in wrong. :/ Ill re-wire the harness if needed. Have the right cable and connections. Thanks for your help.

youll know if you wired it wrong cause youll pop your main fuse if its wrong, and as far as which r/r to but pretty much any 5 pin r/r will work ive used an r1 r/r(if u do that ull need to run an extra grond from the back of the r/r to the chasis ground cause it puts out more resistance than necessary but works gr8)dont use the oem r/r's theyre crap im currently using a gsxr 750 r/r (no extra ground needed)on my 93' with a 636 stator.works perfectly.and strong too str8 swap no mods needed.and like i said as long as its a 5 pin connector u should be good it dont have to look the same mines hard wired and works gr8 (cause i originally fried my connector to my oem r/r just a lil food for thought from my trial and error with r/r's

That R/R looks to be the old flat style. Several model R/R's were superseded to the newer finned type, which dissipates heat much more easily. I would def look into getting one of the finned type replacements.

See the sunken, cracked spot in the epoxy-fill? That's heat damage. The epoxy
should be a smooth, flat, even fill. If that's your current r/r, it is toast and needs
to be replaced. Even Honda's OEM, is a new catalog #, it now has a finned, heat-sink.

If the PO says, it's been replaced..He's either lying or replaced it with an equally,
prone to fail replacement. Which, has also failed.

As far as which goes where for the +/-, can't say, for sure. I've got a F3, my harness
(with the r/r oriented the same way) has the 3 stator wires across the top, with the
hot (red/white) on the lower-left and the ground (green) on the lower-right.

I'm basically posting this, so searchers will get the right info, since the thread is
ancient. He's either fixed it or sold the bike by now, lol.

Hope this helped him, earlier...and somebody else, in the future.

Ern

Yes, I have fixed it. I used an RR from a GSXR. Runs well now.

For future reference, if you're trying to save a few bucks Rick's R/Rs seem to work pretty well. I've seen a lot of people use these and no returns (so far).

You can find used MOSFET R/Rs on ebay for like $35. They are much more reliable than regular shunt type R/Rs and put out better voltage anyway. Only thing you have to change is the plug connector
