Old rag
old towels, hand towels, and was rags mostly. those little red towels are pretty good.
and always keep the dirty ones in a bucket or something then just wash them later. no sense in throwing them out.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I think I might ask around at certain businesses that will have off cuts of fabric they don't need anymore.
I have cleaned some rags in a bucket before but then I was worried about pouring the filthy water down the drain, storm drains all go to the river, I'm a bit of a Eco warrior when it comes do disposing of potentially hazardous waste.
