Not staying on after carb clean
hey i just got a cbr 600 1991 from my brother. it was running rough and my cousin who looked at it said it needed to have the carbs cleaned. i took out the carb and soaked it in mineral spirits. then cleaned it with carb cleaned. i put everything back together and tried to start it. it took a little but but if finally started. i let is run for about 5 mins, then i took it for a spin. it ran a little rough then shut of in about half a mile. it would not start up again. i took it back to the house and tied again i took a little but it started up for a little then shut off again. i could not keep it on. then it would not start back up. any advice?
Did you pull the carbs apart and clean the jets and blow all the circuit holes, are the slides moving together when they are slid up in the housing. Are the main jets clear, sounds like you missed somethings, I have a 91 cbr f2 and had the same problems till I cleaned them thoroughly. Did you reset the fuel mixture screw back, did you synchronize the carbs...just letting them soak will not do the job......
ya sure heres some advice..
pull the carbs out Again!!! buy actual carburator cleaner.. you need to start opitsite the float bowl side first because the slides have thin rubber on the end of them and if any cleaner gets on there they will deform.. anyway mineral spirits is like five times weaker than actual carburator cleaner..
once your done pulling the slides out and set aside. flip the carburator over again and then take the float bowls apart and drop all the little parts into a small jar of "cleaner" which, i actually just use the spray, then kinda close the lid enough just so can use the little red attachment on the can and spray all the parts at once and let soak.. while those parts are soaking i take the carburator and just start spraying every hole i can find in it!!! especially those holes that i just removed all those little screws from!!! anyway i then pull out my compressed air and blast the entire carburator, meanwhile if your following these directions i hope you have safety glasses on from the begining, but there are far better descriptions out there on this subject w/pictures... anyway i guess my over all point is: you need to clean your carburator a little bit better and mineral spirits just wont cut it..and until its done right you'll keep having trouble keeping the bike running or moving on and dianosing a different problem...

i took out the jets and used carb cleaner in every hole. i even shot it through the jet till it look clean. i did not soak the parts in carb cleaner over night though. just sprayed it.
i looked into the fuel mixing screw. i screwed it all the way down. where should i set it at?

hey man congrats on the bike first off. Secondly, Like others have said SPRAY with CARB CLEANER(i.e. GUMOUT, etc.). than once you put the carbs back together and back on the bike, double check the position of the fuel petcock on your gastank. I know when i got my f1 it ran and rode great for a little while but it was set on reserve so when i was riding to work one day it broke down on me i thought. I knew i had gas in the tank and it was just running fine so wtf ya know. well after i went thoruhg and pulled carbs apart and wondered through aimlessly for a couple of hours(im still new to the bike world myself) i decided to check the petcock and found it to be on reserve. Turned it all the way counterclockwise and after about 10 seconds of turning it over it fired right up and no problems since. Good luck and let us know.
also a good start point i have found for the fuel mixture screw is to once you have bottomed it out on the carb to turn it out about 2 full turns and adjust from there. also dont forget to get your carbs synced when your done or search for a forum to bench sync em yourself before you put em back on. Its not as good as syncing on the bike running but its still pretty good if you dont have the mony or tools to do it other ways.
