I am new too and asked a sim ilar question the other day. It seems for me cruising at around 6000 rpm's is where i feel the best. I am having serious vibration issues right now though probably from a cct from what I've read and its getting annoying.

Yep, what jharbinson said; keep the rpms at about 6K. I rarely stay in first gear unless I'm doing real slow maneuvering type stuff (gas station/parking lots). For just cruising, I'd say 2nd is good to about 45mph. One thing that bugs the heck out of me is people who lug their engines; downshift! lol

You need to determine your own shift points. Some tips to remember...
If you ride where your engine is the buzziest all that vibration is transmitted through the frame and metal eventually fatigues.
Quick acceleration is not available in lower rpm range.
High revs attract attention...mostly negative(police, neighbors). Don't crap where you sleep.
CBR's are sportsbikes. High rpm won't hurt them.
Some people argue that noise saves lives.
You pick your shift point based on the riding circumstance, time of day, location, road conditions, level of youthful exhuberance, traffic , and a host of other factors.
Happy riding!
