Made a booboo....HELP!
Took a my levers, sets, pegs, etc etc for powder coating. Best friend and his dad did the coating for me. Powder coated the shift lever, connecting rod up to the transmission. Sorry dont know the real terminology for some of the parts. The piece that fits around transmission piece (the part connected to the rod leading down to the shift lever) had a layer of powder coat inside where the teeth are....so it wouldnt fit right when I tried to fit it back on. So I did what i could to get as much of the powder coat off the teeth around the inside of that peice so it could be fitted back onto the bike.
Even after much time trying to get all the powder coat out it still wouldnt fit back on. Like the piece wasnt big enough to fit around the transmission piece(sorry dont know what the real parts are called) After even more scraping at the layer of paint it started to fit. Got it about 1/2 way on and it stuck, wouldnt go any further. So I didnt think it would be so bad to slightly... persuade the tight squeeze. Took a screwdriver to slightly open the piece above the rod and a small rubber hammer to help pry it open just alil more while i was pushin the piece on. I know I didnt hit it very hard but it obviously was alot more tempermental than I had thought.
After getting the piece on I started my bike and now there is a loud clicking sound coming from the transmission, only makes the noise when the bike is leaned on the kickstand side. Noise goes away when the bike is stood up or leaned to the other side. Im also able to push in the piece where the lever connects to the transmission....like 1/4-1/2 inch. When pushed in the bike wont catch any gears but when pulled out shifts back and fowarth gears np. Havent driven or moved the bike since I did it bc I dont wanna mess it up even more.
Dad mentioned that it might be some clip in there that I may have knocked loose....? What do you guys think, any help would be great. We were planning on getting the book for the bike and tearin her down to see what the problem is. Any help or ideas on what it could be on my very...slack explanation would be great.

You didn't say what kind of bike, but almost all are set-up similar. There is usually a couple of clips inside the tranny on the selector shaft. If one of those gets knocked off then the selector shaft can move back and forth and will prevent the tranny from shifting like you are describing.
There's nothing you can do short of pulling it apart and fixing it....

Thats a bad mistake to make. Have fun taking apart the tranny now to fix that. Next time get some paint stripper and use that to clean the paint out of the teeth or tell your friend and his dad to plug the hole before they paint it.
