Default Lower Charge Voltage with Headlamp on

Firstly,
Hello...

Chose this forum after looking around and thought it looked nice, and respectful, I hope it's OK to make a post and say hi, anyone that can offer help would be most appreciated...
I've recently sold my 2010 CBR1000RRA, and moved across to a pretty nice 1998 Cbr600f, my blade was getting ruined with daily use and it need servicing and a new home, and I needed a work horse and something without a mountain of electronics over the air intake.
My Cbr600f needs a carb balance for sure, but one thing I have noticed is that the charge voltage when the headlamp is on is a bit low at lower rpm it does come up on revs, but I managed to get a flat battery, I think the battery was old too and frost damaged so it's been replaced.
I hear the reg rect on these bikes and the connectors can go, mine looked out from outside when I was replacing battery...
Could it be the reg rect getting weak or is it a windings issue... What do you guys think?

Hi Jake, welcome to the forum, of course it's OK to say hi, pleased to have you with us.

Now to your problem.

When you say the charge is lower at low RPM's, how low do you actually mean? Normally these bikes will only start to charge properly above 2-2500 RPM anyway.

Secondly, if you're doing only a short commute, in stop start traffic, it doesn't really give the bike a chance to fully charge the battery either.

Replacing the battery is a good start, especially if you don't know how old/knackered it is.

Try putting a voltmeter across the battery terminals and run the bike at 2-3000 RPM, you should get about 14volts.

Let us know your results.

I've done a test and it's about right, a little low, but no issues with the new battery since it's replacement and a lot of night time riding.

Good news Jake.

Keep those revs up in the winter and if you've got a garage, it's well worth buying a trickle charger to keep the bike hooked up to.
