Just remove the fairing (left side lower and upper). I've been told that you don't "have" to drain the oil, but i like to anyways. Remove all the bolts, then use a thin flathead screwdriver to begin to pry the cover away from the case. The stator is magnetic, so the cover will feel like it doesn't want to come off. Once you get it off, simply unbolt the stator and the bolt that routes the wire, bolt the stator into the new cover, apply some liquid gasket to the outside edge, and bolt it back on. Pretty simple fix, really.

I'm doing this as well. Having both the covers powerder coated. Get some HONDA gasket maker. Its what they use at the factory. I also have a 06'.

Be sure NOT to mar the surface of the case or the cover. This will cause a leak. Use a Razor if you have to clean anything, but don't use the sharp edge.

Hope this helps.
