Idle/Shifting issues
Hey Guys,
so i took my baby out for a day ride and everything was great until late at night. The weather dropped from 80 to 55. When i went to turn my bike on it, everything sounded fine, but I noticed immediate issues when shifting form N to 1st, there was some odd sputtering going on that would dissapear when I would get the RPM's up.
After about 5 minutes, the bike warming up, things seemed to get better but teh sputtering after shifting in my lower gears continued until I got home.
Any ideas what this is?
Thanks for the help!

Update: this absolutely does not occur when I'm in top gear, highway riding, around 60 mph or more. However, when exiting and doing a light engine break I can somewhat feel the sputter. When I get down to 3rd or so and maintain consistent throttle, the sputtering appears.
This was about 55-60 degrees.

After spending some time trying to duplicate the issue, I'm thinking i could have some foul plugs. Gunna start there and see if that resolves the issue.
Does anyone think this could possibly be an air filter issue?

If your bike was running on carbs I would have said it was down to the pilot jets but as the bike is fuel injected and runs ok at 60+ mph I would have to say it is down to perhaps the battery or charging system. As the revs increases your battery will get a good charge whereas at lower revs it may be discharging. Start the bike and with the headlight on rev the engine over 5000 revs and watch to see if the headlight beam brightens up. 3500 revs may be enough to do this so try at these revs first. Another check you can do is connect a volt meter (multimeter) across the battery and rev the engine again. You should see an increase in voltage to around 13.5-14.2 volts. Any less then the Rectifier is duff or the alternator. Hope this gives you something to work on? Not too bright when it comes down to electronic fuel injected engines I'm afraid!
Interesting, thanks for the suggestion!
I did recently replace the battery, however, it has gotten awful cold over the past month here (down to 19 - 30 degrees). I wonder if the battery has in fact lost some charge.
I'll give that a shot as well and let you know. Thanks again.

Update: I finally found the time last night to run tests on the battery by revving the engine, checking the headlight beams, etc.
- The bike doesn't even fire now.
The electrical components do come on, but the ignition button gains no reply.
Next steps:
1.) Recharge the battery, if that doesn't work then I'll be completely lost, however
2.) Check the plugs to see how they look will be the next agenda item.
Anyone think I'm headed in the right direction? This is my first bike, first issue, and i feel like a headless chicken right now.
EDIT: I thought about this for a second and realized that if my electrical components are on, and stayed on after attempting to start the bike, i'm thinking that rules out a battery issue. Couldn't hurt to check the amps though I guess.

Went to check the amps and before doing so figured I would try and start my girl up. Well, it started and idled fine however once my bike warmed up (136 or so) it started idling very weak, almost like it wanted to die, but it never did.
So, I killed it. Started it back up again almost immediately and it idled strong for 1 minute. I have videos of what I'm explaining and can upload if anyone is interested.
I'm going after some FI Lucas, that's my new starting point as it seems like a fuel issue. But what's weird is the refusal to fire this morning turned into a weak start later this afternoon, which wouldn't signify fuel issue to me.
I dunno, any thoughts would be appreciated.

I know i'm talking to myself at this point, but figured i'd keep posting for anyone who might experience the same issue.
I added FI Lucas to the tank, it definitely made the bike run stronger but after about a 5 minute ride there is still idling issues at red lights. The RPM's will bounce from .8 to about 2k consistently. The bike will not die if I turn the throttle just slightly to maintain 2k RPMS, it will die if I didn't do this.
- Checked the battery, it was definitely needing of a charge. Got it charged up, this did not fix the issue. Still having idle issues.
- I messed with the idle screw (after reading my manual) and this helped a little bit, but it wasn't a complete resolution. Still experiencing inconsistent idling.
What I did notice was that when I hit the gas, the RPM's climb and slowly come down to 2k, almost like something in the manifold is getting stuck. My understanding is if I hit the gas (with clutch in) the RPM's should drop pretty quickly back to the idle state. My bike doesn't do this.
So, i understand foul spark plugs can be culprits for weird issues. Im gunna get those replaced this week. We'll see how it goes. For anyone reading, wish me luck
