Default How do you rivet a master link?

I just got me a new chain for the F3. It has a rivet type master link. My question is how do you rivet it on? I think there is a tool or something. I need to know ASAP so I can get her going again.

yes, you need a chain press/rivetor tool...
cycle gear has them...or your local shop.

Just use a C clip master link. There are no expensive tools to buy.

You definitely need a rivet tool. It should have a set of anvils that you drop init and then just press the rivet. Everyone I have ever seen comes with simple instructions, but if you run into issues just post up and I'll see if i can help out. One thing that I would suggest is to make sure that you have the right master link. I tried to help a buddy rivet one and after a little bit of frustation, I realized that the master link wasn't the right one. If the pin seems to short to come through the link it's probably the wrong size.

The master link I have is the one that came sealed up with the chain. How much does one of those tools cost?

you could just go grab a c-clip master link for a buck or whatever. Thats probably what I would do.

Way cheaper than the $100, but I have had two chains come off before - one was a clip, and the other a rivet style that was not riveted (both changed by prior owners).

If your multi talented and have some good peining hammers you can go to town and try and mold them over yourself. That is what I did with my guad. Took a long time and two guys but it hasn't failed. I would have felt a lot more confident with a rivet tool though.

If your old chain is still on the bike ride it down to your local shop and take the old one off. Then ask them if you can borrow the tool and use it in the parking lot or have them do it and get one later. Or see if anyone you know that rides has one you can borrow. Or see if there is a local club that knows someone.
