Can I use DOT 5.0 instead of 5.1? I hear the 5's can withstand greater temperatures. Which brand should I use? Or should I bring it to the shop to do it?

You're better off sticking with DOT 4. Yes, DOT 5 can handle greater temperatures, but the DOT 4 lubes the "blink" and protects the "er" against thermal breakdown.

It depends on the bulb's filaments. Japan and the ROTW use metric filament sizes that run about 1mm hotter, so stick with DOT 5 or 5.1.5.

American manufacturers seem to think SAE is a standard worth keeping, in which case you could use anything from DOT 2 all the way up to DOT 4. Bleh...

ok guys so my blinkers stopped working the other day out of the blue. i checked the reservoir today (which is a PITA to get that cap off btw!) and it was bone dry. i filled it up but now whenever my lights blink they change different color, almost like a disco light. do you think i messed something up running it dry?

You've probably overfilled your blinker reservoir. And by running it bone dry, they'll still "blink" but you may have damaged the "er". You might even have to replace the "er".
