Default Hotwire Tap

Hey guys,

Need some assistance. I am looking to get a waterproof usb unit for my 2006 1000rr. I had something that went to my battery with a fuse which turned a cig lighter. I found that this worked but it also drained my batter after sitting for awhile. (even with nothing plugged into it). I know where the ground is on the bike but where is a good spot to tap into for power only when the bike is on. Im guessing the low beam would be one but i would like to leave that alone if i could. Anything else i could tap into?

Thanks

Here's an interesting link to a weather-proof usb port...

PANEL TAPP? Panel Mount USB Port

Here's a read on wiring a relay to power accessories...

Wiring a Relay for Accessories

Another how-to on the subject...

Distribution Block Power Relay

Wiring all of the accessory type add-ons through a relay, insures that they aren't
pulling load when the ignition is off, and saves remembering to throw a switch to do so.

Hope this helps, Ern

a USB isn't going to pull that much power. my fuse tray has a large incoming supply that is switched with the ignition; i tapped a line off that and created a new fused circuit (which therefore only has power when the key is on.) i bought one of these from cycle gear which has a waterproof cover when not in use, and i plug a small USB adapter into the socket for power.

and if you're running a power lead to the battery box anyway, why not run the ground there as well...

I ended up taping into the ignition wire that is hot when the key is on. Then ran the ground to the chassis ground with the others. I still have to mount the cig lighter part but i will post pictures once i am finished. I plan on drilling into my front stay but we will see what i come up with..
