Default Help Please!!!!

About 3 weeks ago I went and had the battery charged on my 1999 900rr came back home and the bike started with no problem. I left it running for about 20 mins. About a week later I went to to take it out and it wouldn't start. I would turn over and back fire. Let it set for another week now it will not even turn over. Any suggestions? I usually just take it to the shop, but now that I am retired and have a lot of time on my hands, thought I would try and figure it out myself. Thanks for any input.

Are you actually riding the bike? It seems like you're just letting it sit for weeks between riders. And having the engine just sit there and run for 20 mins is not good either.

I believe that the bike won't charge the battery unless the RPM's are over 2500 (at least, that's what I've heard on the 600RR's anyway).......so if you just let it sit there and idle for 20 minutes, you were just draining the battery.

Yes,additionally make sure that it's idling in the range set my mfr. Check the voltage at that RPM.

Hey Spaug, I have the same bike as you. How old is the battery? I've found that at two years old, my battery won'tstart the bike after sitting for a week, even after I've taken the battery right out while it was sitting. I also didn't charge it when it was new like I was supposed to, so I'm sure that shortened it's life. Mine seems to charge okay at idle, but it will heat up to about 225 before 20 minutes, which isn't good. Prolonged idle should be avoided as much as possible.

Motorcycle batteries don't last long fellas. Thats why they want you to trickle charge.
