HELP after k & N filter install
Hi, I ride a '93 600 F2. Today I went out and bought a K&N filter for it. I installed it, and while I had everything apart I decided to change the oil too. After I got everything back together, I went for a ride to check pressure and look for oil leaks. Now my bike runs like absolute crap. In first and second gear it is sooo slow and sounds like a damn Harley. It had tons of power before I changed the filter, now it just putts along like a moped and sounds HORRIBLE. Does anyone know what I did wrong? My carbs are jetted and I have a D&D slip-on, so do I need a tune-up now or something???!!! Someone PLEASE help me... I really don't want to have to take it to the dealer. Thanks in advance for any help.
Does your bike have the velocity stacks above each carb? If so, did you take them off? I've heard that if you switch them out of original position that will cause that. I think of the 4, there are 2 different ones.
My bike does have velocity stacks, but I didn't remove them. Could I have bumped them out of place or something? Also, is car oil the same as bike oil? The previous owner said that he only used Mobil 1 fully synthetic oil in the bike. So I went to AutoZone and bought some 10W30 Mobil 1 oil for the bike. I think it is very unlikely that the type of oil is my problem, but is it possible? Thanks again
That is wierd... Seems extremely unlikely that it has anything to do with the oil (unless it was over filled). I would go back and check the velocity stacks, make sure the air box is sealed up good, and that the filter is installed properly. Make sure nothing is blocking the intake and that nothing fell into the stacks. Maybe the fuel line got pinched when you put the tank back on or you lost a vacuum tube? I hope you figure it out
I didn't put any oil on the filter. The filter came pre-oiled in a plastic bag. I took it out of the bag and put it right in. I looked on the Mobil 1 website, and it says that Mobil 1 for cars is different than Mobil 1 for bikes. It says that Mobil 1 for cars can cause clutch slippage in bikes. What exactly are the symptoms of clutch slippage? And when I change my oil should I flush everything out by buying twice the oil, filling once, run the engine to circulate for a minute, then put clean oil back again. Does this mean I have to change the filter again too? Thanks for all the help so far, I (we) will get this fixed sooner or later!
hmmm... my K&N filter didnt come with oil on it.... anyways, clutch slipage feels like your back tire is on ice and just spinning but in reallity its your clutch only partially conecting the engine to the tranny (back wheel). but from what you said its DEFFINETLY somthing to do with the carbs.. you should replace the oil filter every time you change the oil (about 4-6,000 miles) and if you put mobile 1 car oil in your bike get that **** out! get mobile 4T (best oil you can buy) or amsoil.... and when your done with that start it up and see if that did anything.. if it didnt try putting the old filter in (NOT CLEANED) and see if it runs the same as it did before... if it does then its somthing to do with the jetting... if it still runs like crap with the old filter in then i would rip apart the carbs and see what the hell is up! oh and you dont need to "flush" your bike! thats why they make magnietic oil drain plugs!
All new K & N filters for all applications come pre-oiled from the factory... It's not brown oil like you would find in a car, but it's a very lightweight clear oil that makes the filter feel a little wet. Well, everyone has chipped in with good advice, but I'm going to ride it to the dealer today. I think I would end up taking the whole bike apart looking for the problem. It pisses me off though because I know it's something so simple. Too bad I'm still a newb with bikes. I've bought several K & N Filters over the years for my cars, but I have a feeling this is going to be the most expensive one yet! I'll post the official diagnosis as soon as I get word from the mech.
