Default Is this a good rivet job?

This is my first chain/sprocket install. I think i did a good job. I took my time . The spacing (width) of the master link is exactly the same as the other links after pressing it on. I'm just not sure about the riveting part. Does this look ok? Or should I give it a little more? I test rode it and it seems fine. Thanks

It looks correct. Hard to tell with just a picture.

The first time I did one, I rode it up to the local shop.
I've got a good relationship with them.

Just had them take a peek and give me an opinion.
They won't (for liability reason's) endorse it,
but they'll let you know if it looks wrong.

Hope this helps, Ern

Can't tell anything with the little pic.

That type of link doesn't take too much to keep on tho, how exactly did you attempt it?

ok , i posted some more pictures in the gallery along with some pics of my bike. It's the one that says CBR and wheel. I have to change that. I did the best i could with the pics. They are off an ipod and I cant get a clear focused shot. Sorry, I'm new to this. As far as the riveting job. I did it exactly the way your supposed to do it. After pressing the master link on , i put the riveting "pin" or whatever you call it in the tool and tightened it to rivet the link. I just dont know how hard to tighten the tool cause it did feel tight. Thanks again.

It should at least visually look flared out. Its doesn't take much really. If you have a micrometer you can measure the end of the pin and make sure the OD had increased.

There should be a spec either in the service manual or with the chain that specifies the correct width of the rivet head after compressing it. You just measure the head of the rivet with a micrometer as mentioned, and keep tightening the tool until the rivet is expanded to the correct size.

Thanks guys. I emailed RK to see if they could give me the measurements of the master pin before it gets flared. That is something I didnt measure before I did the job and I should have. There site shows a correct flare amount in the faq which is ridicoulously small (not even 1/2 of a millimeter!). But, that doesnt help me if I dont have anything to compare it to. All i know is the diamter of my flared pin now. Thanks again . this forum is great.

The flare needs to be enough to keep the side plate from coming off, which luckily isn't subjected to force in that direction while in use. As long as you can see a flare in the rivet, it is good. If you flare it too much it can crack, which is bad... bad to the point where you will want to put a new master link on.

Oh, and I forgot....make sure when you pressed the plate on that you pressed it on to the same width as the other links on the chain...too loose and you will lose the grease in the rings, too tight and you will press the grease out of the rings (and lose it) and you will create a tight link in the chain, which is bad for the chain and sprockets.

If you can see a flair on the rivit then you've done enough.
