Hi, I have a 2000f4 with 14k miles on it. On two occasions the other night when trying to pop a wheelie, I would be moving at about 7500 rpm in 1st gear and then give her some clutch and rev it up. All of-a-sudden it would rev up to redline and go into neutral. You have no idea how embarrassing this is and how much it pisses me off. I know its some sort of tranny issue. I change the oil every 2500-3000, and the previous owner changed it every 1000.
My last oil change (about 1800 miles ago) I switched from regular Honda dino oil to the Honda semi-synthetic 10w-40(without molly). I also notice when shifting in lower gears and mid rpm's, the tranny makes a clunky sound when it shifts and I feel a little feed back through my shifter. Has anyone else experienced this problem? And if so how much $$ am I looking at to fix it. I would really appreciate any help.

you have the case of a bent shift fork problem. It could also be a fork shaft as well. Typical indications are slipping out of gear/clunky noise when shifting. This is HIGHLY common when doing wheelies and missing a couple of gears here and there. I fixed this myself on my 954 and it cost me $40 for a shift fork. I am experienced in engine overhaul so it wasn't a problem for me. But if you aren't be prepared to shell out some money for mostly labor costs. I called 3 shops before i fixed mine and the cost ranged from $1,000-1,500 to fix.

So do you have to rip apart the tranny to replace the shift fork?

no you can get to them by taking off the oil pan and getting them through the bottom. Thats how i did it on the 954 engine but i'm not sure about yours. You need to get a maintenance manual. You can find cd-rom manuals on ebay for around 5 bucks. Also here is a good site to get parts. www.bikebandit.com

Ya, according to the manuel you have to take the engine out. Im not sure i trust my self to take it out and put it back together. Maybe I should just sell the bike...

You will need to remove the motor and crack the block. Besides a bent shift fork, your gears could also be toast.
I'd have it checked out by a shop before making any major decisions
