Default Fuel octane

In attempt to dispell all rumors, misunderstandings, conjectures, etc. about the different fuel octane ratings and what they mean and what should be used in your bike, please click on this link and read fully what it has to say. I found it to be very enlightening and I hope that you find the same true. And by the way, octane boosters are a huge waste of money. Thank you.

"low grade" Octane rated gas isn't a bad thing. The only thing an Octane rating does, is specify how much the air/fuel mixture can be compressed without detonating. If your bike does not exhibit the knocking sounds, then you are not experiencing early combustion and you will get the most amount of fuel burned. If you use a higher Octane rated gas, you are leaving more unburned fuel, preventing you from reaching peak HP and fuel economy.

from the factory, my 1997 cbr 600f3 calls for at least 91 octane, there has to be a reason for this, and what about bmw's and those fancy cars, they use high octane?

From the factory the 99-2003 F4 and F4i bikes call for 86 octane. I dont think your 97 F3 calls for 91 octane, I owned the same bike and I had no problems with it running 86 octane. Infact, I am pretty sure I read inside my manual that came with the bike that it calls for 86 octane as well.

Those BMW's and SuperCars have a high compression. Thats why they call for the higher octane gas.

This is what manual I am reading this info from.

ok, first off from the other thread on this topic i said that it runs best on 91 octane because of the high compression on the newer bikes... (12.0: 1) sombody told me thats not true...... even thoe i just sat on a 2005 R6 at the dealer like a week ago and it said -PREMIUM FUEL ONLY- right on the tank.....

To whome it may concern,

The yamaha R6 has about the same compression ratio (12.4:1) as my F4i (12.0:1) making my bike also require 91 just like the R6 because of the compression.
once again, the lower octane fuel will detenate before it gets to top dead center...
so basically if you have 12.0:1 or higher run on premium. 10:1 or higher run on middle, 8:1 or higher on 87...

so find out your compression on your f3! and if its 12.0:1 or higher then put premium!

50%yes-50%no, someone is lying!? help!!
I bought a 91 cbr f2 (with no owners manual) a have asked and read and only got more confused, some people say I should use 87, because of the low compression of my older bike, that higher octane will only rob me power and many reasons more explained very well . It seams like I have heard the exact same amount but opposite and that I should use higher octane because of the higher compression on motorcycles, also explained with details. Its ridiculous!! Some say 87, some say 91 and some say 93! and everyone assures it, I know that half of them are laying and don’t know what they are talking about. But who?
some say the owners manual call for 87 and some say it calls for 91, come on! Dose anyone realy know what the owners manual say?? dose anyone have the manual with them? but please don’t reply if you are not certain
Help!! what should I use on my f2? why??
thanks!

Are you just pullin this out of your *** or what man??? Would you like me to scan and paste the picture of the page onto the forum. It says plain as day that it takes 86 octane fuel for US models and 91 for UK models.

I told you this before.

Anyone else want me to take a picture of the page and post it on the website????

As for the service manual. I have been Using Haynes and Chilton repair and service manuals for years. They do just fine.
And you are talking about a Yamaha again.

so basically what you are saying is that there is NO POINT FOR PREMIUM FUEL?!?!?!?!??! THEY MAKE IT FOR A REASON!!!! HIGH COMPRESSION ENGINES!!!!
have you ever actually took your bike on a dyno??? have you actually read WHY people use premium gas???? and NO I AM NOT PULLING THIS OUT OF MY ***!! i am saying this from experiance on the dyno!! SO, actaully read up on it and learn instead of just copien a page from a book! I dont give a flien **** what your book says! i have re-built and repaired more bikes then you have proly ridin! oh and i guess if you build up a stroked F4i motor you would use 87 JUST LIKE THE PROS!! HA! As for you gormay, find out what your compression ratio is.... and go off what i said before...

i tried to be nice before but it obviosly it didnt get my point across....
