Fixing Existing Tranny vs Buying New Motor
What's up guys, I need some help on my next course of action.
I have a 2000 F4 w/ about 18,000 miles.
My bike was popping out of third gear and I don't feel like paying the shop to fix it.
I'm just about to finish up removing my engine.
Which do yinz think is the better way to go.
1.) Keep my engine (~18,000 miles)that I know is good and split the case and fix the transmission myself
Guessing around $300 in parts
or
2.) Buy a new engine that I know nothing about?
Got a lead on a local engine that needs a fly wheel. (11,000 miles)
Also know of a completeengine about 6 hours away, in the pics its very clean. (<10,000 miles)
Roughly $500 for either engine.
Let me know what you guys think.
Thanks in advance

If you can get that engine out, you can fix that trans. They are not complicated. Thirdgenlxi on here just did his on an F4i. It did not seem that terribly difficult. Besides, you KNOW how your engine has been cared for. It's best to just buy a new fork or two, maybe a couple gears, and fix it. You should have a service manual by your side while doing it. You can find them in the General Tech section of this website under the stickies.

I'm with the guy above me...if you can do it yourself...yeah that is the way to go. If you want a parts list, you are going to need 3rd gear and the gear that engages it. You may need the shift fork for that gear too, depending if you are holding the shifter trying to keep it in gear. Also if you are doing that, you might want to change the shift drum, you have have dented it by forcing it to hold it in 3rd gear. The crankcases are sealed by silicon and you would want to replace your countershaft seals, also replace any and all circlips used to remove the necessary gears. You don't even need to disassemble the top end of the engine. All you need really is time. Where are you located

Thanks for the imput so far.
I'm located in Pittsburgh, PA.
I've got the bike all torn apart and am going to drop the engine tonight.
Just want to get a 27mm pt6 socket as to make sure not to round anything.
