In the spring I had a fire in my detached cottage garage. The main body, instrument cluster, engine, wheels for my 87 CBR600F project were stored in my indoor garage so I still have them, but I had a bunch of parts that were in the fire - seat, all my plastics, gear shift assembly, turn signals, air box, exhaust and gas tank.
The exhaust and gas tank were the only things that are visible after the fire. I assumed they were not salvageable and so left them exposed to the elements where they got rusty, while I battle with insurance.
Today I started wondering whether maybe I should try to save the bike, possibly with the tank and exhaust. Here are some pics.
The gas tank sounds metallic when you tap it. I had put some Marvel Mystery Oil in the tank when I removed it to ward off rust, and I can still hear it sloshing around.
I haven't yet tried to remove any rust, as I am hoping to hear from experts here. Would a fire or the rust that accumulated later compromise the integrity of the tank, for instance? What about my exhaust?
