F4i starter motor question
Just installed a new to me motor and Im having a whole slew of problems. Spoke to omr who advised me that one of my problems may be a shotty starter motor. Ive never removed one before so I looked at the service manual as well as my old motor. The service manual says to drain the coolant, remove the throttle bodies, remove the thermostat housing and then remove the nut and starter motor cable from the starter motor in order to be able to get the starter motor out.
Service manuals from what Ive seen so far tell you to do a whole bunch of unneccesary **** so I was just curious if anyones done it before and if so, did you do it this way or is there an easier way to get to it
Checking out my old motor it seems as if I may have to do all this but figured Id ask before getting busy tomorrow. This might not even fix the problem Im having but its worth a shot. Oh and FYI - installed new to me motor. Bike was starting up from a cold start no problem. When the bike would warm up it wouldnt start as easy. It would turn over but not start. After a minute or two I would give it another go and hold the throttle open while trying to start and after 5 or so seconds it would start. So far, I fully charged the battery and swapped stators with my old motor but still the same thing is happening. Tonight though after the bike warmed up, I tried to start it and now it wont start at all - even after a few minutes of letting it cool down
Other things Ive changed - new plugs, swapped coil packs from old motor, swapped throttle bodies & fpr from old motor and used my existing wiring harness, regulator/rectifier, computer, ect. and thats about it. Appreciate any info on removing the starter motor or any helpful info if any of yall have had this happen before

Oh and one more question - if its absolutely necessary to do it the way the manual says, the manual calls for a new O-Ring to be installed when putting the thermostat housing back on. If I reuse the existing one will that be a problem or could I use it so I dont have to wait til I get a new one
Appreciate the help

While, I can't answer all of your questions, I can say this. Based on where the starter motor is, it does sound like all steps are neccesary but don't quote me. As far as the O-Rings go, how long has the motor been sitting around? If it's any signifiant amount of time, I would get new rings for sure (would get them either way b/c I wouldn't want to miss a chance at replacing that stuff only to find out you have to get back in there and do it anyway) due to dry rot.
Yeah the motor was sitting in a salvaged bike outside for close to 2 years so I guess I have to order the orings then. Dam I just wanna ride already Arghhh oh well. If anyone else has any suggestions on taking the starter out lemme know. Thanks. [sm=icon_cheers.gif]

Mines not a carbed bike so that wouldnt apply? What should I be looking for on a FI bike? I went to take out the throttle bodies tonight and realized I dont have a long enough screwdriver to get in there and loosen the screws. So tomorrow I'll get the biyatch out and hopefully make some progress.
good point about the o-rings in the carbs. Not sure how the Fi is done, but I do know that there was a fuel line going to two Y connectors on the carbs. The Y connectors in the carbs had o-rings on them also and I can only image that there has to be some o-rings somewhere connecting the actual fuel line to the fuel system on your bike.
good luck bro!
good luck bro!
It does sound as it could bea starter problem. But before I did that, I would take your battery in and have it load tested. a weak battery will act the same. You may have the proper voltage, but not enough amps to start it when the battery warms up from charging.
