Default F2 dying while riding/battery wont charge...anyone had the same problem?

I'll be riding along and it will start to die like it's out of gas. I'll pull over after it dies and the battery is dead. After this happened, I gave the battery a full charge and it happened again after a couple of short (<5 mile) rides. So I take it either the battery is bad (won't hold acharge) or the alternator or regulator has gone bad and aren't allowing the battery to charge.

Anyone had this same problem? I googled it and it seemed there were a few people that have had the same problem. If so, what was the problem and what did you do to fix it? Anyone have any input on what it might be?

Also, I looked up an alternator to see how much they were. What I got was that an alternatoris at least $350. That sound correct?

I know very little about bikes, usually just do my own oil changes andtinker just a little bit. I can get a manual off of ebay tonight for $10 that I just download in a PDF file that he says "allows you to diagnose problems exactly how bike shops do it." Knowing almost nothing about bikes, is this something I could do or would I just be better off to take it to my local bike shop and let them figure it out?

Well your charging system consists of the battery, stator(alternator) and voltage regulator.

Here is a thread that shows you how to diagnose the sytem very thoroughly. You do need a multimeter.

http://forums.cbrworld.net/forums/140473/ShowPost.aspx

You can get non-oem stators for about 140 dollars off ebay. When i first learned to ride i rode the bike at about 3000rpms for about half an hour and when i tried starting it again the battery was pretty much stoned dead. I read that the bike only charges above 5000rpms, so we took it out and rode it for about 10 minutes in higher revs and so far it hasn't done it again.... i'm sure this isn't your problem but i thought i'd mention it.

Yea I read that about it not charging unless its at 5000rpms at another forum. But they said 3000rpms. But you're right, that wasn't the problem...I made sure I was at at least 6k when I left this morning and it still died.

I don't have a multimeter but I know the bike shop does I'm thinking I'd probably just be better off to let the bike shop investigate it don't you?

id almost promise you its your reg/rec. there are numerous threads about this very topic. especially in the F3 section. replace your reg/rec, charge your battery and enjoy ... also just hope that by continually running your bike in this damaged state you didnt mess up your stator but start with your reg(its easier and cheaper to replace) and after you charge up your battery you will be working fine

Woops maybe it is 3000, i'll have to check.

Its not difficult to diagnose that stuff and a multimeter will probably cost you less than taking it to a shop. But if you're stumped then yeah go for it. Good luck to you.

Edit: if you need to replace your regulator and you're a bit short of $ like me, then you can use an 04+ gsxr regulator. They are much much cheaper than the honda units and, from what i've heard, work really well. Thread

ok guys thanks alot...I just don't know what to do...IfI don't take it to the bike shop tonight, I can't get it to them until tomorrow night for sure...I'd love to try to do it myself, but I think even if I found the problem, I'd still have to take it to a bike shop to fix the problem. But I may try to pick up a multimeter on the way home and see if I can't do something myself...thanks alot though!

goto a local motorcycle recycle yard. pick up even a used reg. take off your right side tail fairing. the reg will be bolted to the side you cant miss it. un bolt the old one, unplug it. plug the new one in. bolt it up, charge your battery and you'll be fine.

its much chaper then taking it to a shop, you can do it your self, and youll be able to ride before teh day is over more then likely within an hour or 2
