Default Current Condition

Hey everyone.. i have a 1991 Honda CBR600F2 with 20k miles on it..I bought from a guy up in Pennsylvania, and when i bought it, it worked fine.. Maybe 2 months later.. the problems began....

First.. The bike refused to go anywhere near 60 MPH.. it would revv up there and go like a pro... all the way up to 50.. but once it gets near 60.. It starts to what my guess is.. "Miss Fire".. You'll be driving at like 5k RPM and it'll rev then do a putting sounds and catch itself again then revv. all the while not going anywhere why still @ 5k RPM, and if you punched it, Nothing would happen.

Being a novice with bikes i honestly didn't know what was going on so i just decided im gonna keep it under 40 and when i get paid next week im gonna take it to a bike shop..

Well that didn't last long, 2 Days before i could take it to get checked I brought it down to my Campus from the dorms.. not even a mile.. it was driving fine.. Later that day, i decided to get it back up there before it starts to rain.. I run out too my bike.. and I try to start it.. It's rough and it starts and idles lower than it should... it also sounds lower and it's making the putting noises without me even moving it.. so i figured ****. i need to get up there before it rains, so i hop on, drive it back, pull into my spot and she dies..

That was the last time i drove her..

Now I can say i smelled Gas Quite well the 2nd time i started it.. quite a bit.. I was thinking flooded engine.. so i let it sit overnight, Checked my service manual on how to clear a flooded engine, tried it and tried to start but again nothing.. Soo i start checking gas.. Full... Checking Fuel cutoff.. Full... Didn't know how to check the oil.. But aside from that everything looked in shape.. So now, it's winter.. i have a bike that doesn't work, and Everyday i feel like more of a ****ty rider for not trying to fix it that day..

Does anyone have even a fathom of what might be happening?

Also when i bought it, the guy claimed the bike to have a K&N Air Filter, Fresh plugs and clean carbs, and new tires.. But the rear tire is getting a split so im not so sure about how truthful he was.. Anyway thanks for any help at all!

If you think it's flooded then maybe the carb floats are stuck. Happens to my 750 sometimes, and gas drools out all over the ground. If your floats are stuck, I would pull the spark plugs and replace them, shut off the gas petcock, and let it sit for a day or two with the plugs out to help evaporate whatever gas is in the cylinders. When you think it's ready, put your new plugs in and leave the fuel off when you try to start it. Go for a short ride, and see how it does.

After some consideration.. i have a hunch it might be some fouled spark plugs... it sounds like the most reasonable cause.. cause it wouldn't start without force after i parked it the first time, and when it did it was a big backfire..

My only problem.. i've never taken a bike apart before.. i have no idea what to do.. Anywhere i can find a guide? to changing spark plugs / Removing and Cleaning carbs?

Btw my fuel isn't frozen =p Yessssss.

Make sure the plug wires on on the correct cylinders. That will cause one to run like way you described. I dont know the firing order, so you will have to go to your local dealer and get that. Hope this helps.

I missed something the first time I read that

So - if it ran before it's not too far from running

How much have you been riding it? every day?
Has it sat a long time ever?

A low battery will cause a weak spark. Typically, however, if it will start and idle - it will continue to run properly at higher RPMs. That is assuming that it is charging. If it is not charging the battery dies and it won't so much as turn over. Since you say it is turning over, I don't believe that to be the entire problem. You can rule it out by charging the battery. If it starts it was because the battery was flat. If not - resume testing.

Next dirty carbs - that would be consistent with a clogged main jet (~5000 rpms and up)... what is not entirely normal is for the mains jets to get clogged - they are larger than the smaller low rpm/starting ones. The smaller the hole, the easier to gum/plug.

Not revving beyond a certain point is also a symptom of low fuel levels. This can be because the floats are set too low (if it was working at all before, then it is unlikely the cause because you didn't touch them). Also a pinched fuel line, a dirty fuel filter, or a float that sticks intermittantly. It is possible, but a lower likelihood.

Next - air - if you don't have enough air, you won't have enough go. Check the air box for mice/squirrels/crap.

The biggest thing to check is your oil level. If it is very high, the stuck float idea makes a lot more sense. If it is low top it up and forget about it.

So the things to consider:
- fuel: can it get it, is it getting too much, are the carbs clean, are lines pinched, is the filter dirty, does fuel come out when you drain the carb bowls, when you drain the bowls do they stop flowing, etc
- air: can it breath
- spark: is the battery flat. Charge and test. If that doesn't work and you aren't sure, boost it from a car battery WITH THE CAR TURNED OFF.

Also - could you tell me what colour the spark plugs are? How much choke do you use when you were able to start the bike?

good luck!

Some progress... it cranks which is good but it doesn't turn.. It caught somethign for a half a second but then it went out..

Also i'm hearing this bubbling noise comming from the bike when i try to crank it... Any ideas?
