Cooling issues - thermostat, temp. sensor, or??!
Fan doesn't seem to turn on at all anymore... last i tried, it got up to a 250 reading on the dash, fan still hadn't come on. I'm planning on getting a new fan switch to try that out, think i can get one cheap.
hey ruiz, you said before the fan switch did turn on correct?
if it's not coming on at 250 then the switch is bad. you may want to bypass the switcth to see if the fan turns on by itself. don't forget to check the fan fuse too.

Yeah, i think the fan switch is hosed... Doesn't seem to come on at all. Fan works ok, i shorted the lead to the engine block, turned on fine.
I rode the bike home from work today, and it wasn't a hot day (you're in OC, right Tahoe?), and most of the ride home it was around 184 - that's without a thermostat, about 70 avg speed... It would get down to maybe 176 if I had a open spot in the carpool lane, but most of the time I was drafting behind cars, and it gets up to the 185 range....
This tells me that my cooling system isn't working well enough, and/or i'm running really hot for some reason. Any ideas? the water pump seems to be working fine, when i rev the engine with the radiator cap off, the water looks like its flowing well. I just took the radiator down to the radiator shop to have them flush it w/ their pressure equipment.... Is the radiator just not doing a good enough job? It doesn't look too bad, but has seen better days - I took it to the radiator shop a while back to fix a small leak (bent the area around one of the tubes on the right side)... Thanks for all the help!

Fluid is distilled water and water wetter, much easier when i have to swap it out so often. I'm not so sure of myself now - i noticed some water on the ground this morning when i started it up, i think its leaking from the thermostat housing (since I have no thermostat in), and I don't have full coolant. I'm gonna try and put my old thermostat back in and see how it goes... I was just concerned that it was 185 w/ no thermostat blocking the flow - the thermostat is only partially open at 185, and doesn't fully open until around 205 (which was my temp w/ the new thermostat in)....
hey if water can get out...guess what can get in?!?!? air!
i know you hated taking out the t-stat...hahahha...
take the old one, drill it out. 185 isn't so bad for a warm day.

haha no worries, i've done it so many times now, i can go from running condition, to replacing the thermostat, to back to running condition in just under an hour
I put my old thermostat back in tonight ( no problems with it, i got a new one just in case), and same deal - temps right around 205. Something interesting though, it seems like the temp. comes down real quick when i slow down... I.e., i was on the freeway tonight for about 10 minutes, averaging 200-205 most of the way, then i got off the offramp and stop at the light, and within a few seconds, the temp. display says 190.... Is this a non-cooling issue? Should I sync my throttle bodies, or?
this is a wierd issue (definitely not non-issue)...it should be the other way around.
i'll admit, i'm stumped now...
unless the temp sensor is crazy...but i don't think that's it...it's as if you get less airflow while going fast...or your pump is pumping too fast for anything to cool...which isn't likely since it's connected to a shaft driven by the motor and tranny...
hmmmm....
now that it's getting hot, my bike is starting to act up too...this sunday, caught at a light...fan comes on, but all it does is keep the bike at 234...and wouldn't drop it one bit...as if the fan motor is weak or something...i hate summer heat...thena gain the temp didn't rise so whatever...

I'm stumped as to why the thermostat doesn't seem to open until 205.... I've tested both my old and new thermostat on the stovetop, and both seem to work as specified in the manual. However, when I warm up the bike with the radiator cap off, I don't see coolant flow until it hits 205... Any clue why? this is such a wierd problem. I'm going to check my spark plugs tonight too, to see if they tell me anything (i.e. running lean or something).
