Known for having a weak spot for retards...
First thing you want to do before cleaning and/or detailing your bike is to knock loose any dust, dirt, mud, whatever with good clean water.
If you start polishing with dirt on your bike, you'll polish the dirt and accompanying scratches right into your clearcoat.
After gettting rid of the loos stuff, get a bag of microfiber towels, (about $6-10 at Autozone), some Windex, more water, and some Plexus polish.
Now, use whatever common sense you have and go from there.
