Default Charging system

Ok guys, I have done searches on this website and the fireblade website according to the info i found on this site. I got a bike from a guy. The day i went to pick it up, the charging system went out. We put a new battery in it to get me to a shop, and he had a buddy put a used stator and rectifyer on it. That has worked great for a couple weeks. This weekend it died on me again. The batter is bad, won't hold a charge. No problem I have the reciept and got a new one. I charged it as required with a 1.5A charger till it was topped off. I started the bike and disconnected the stator. The article on this site says i should be charging at 50v at idle. I am only charging at 18v at idle in all three combinations on the plug. When I rev it up around 5k I get 40v at all combinations. When I connect the stator and put the volt meter on the battery i am running at 12.4v, and when I rev it up, where the stator should be pushing the voltage needed, it starts dropping voltage very slowly, .1v about every 10-15 seconds. I am very new to working on motorcycles, so I just want to make sure that some experienced guys here agree that a stator is what i need at this moment before I go buy one. Thank you for your help.
