i just let mine idle for a bit to get some of the sediments off the bottom of the pan and then drain it. by the time i'm done gettin all the oil out of the oil pan, the headers have cooled enough to get the filter out.

Gotta agree with everyone else, do it while it's warm. I'm in the " let it idle 'til it's warm but not hot" camp. I'd never pay the dealer to do something this easy.

Service Manual: Start the engine and let it idle for 3 - 5 minutes. Stop the engine and wait 2 - 3 minutes.
The haynes for my CBR also says:

"The oil should be drained from the engine whilst it is at normal operating temperature. This ensures that the oil is relatively thin and will therefore drain quicker and more completely. Also, any impurities will be held in suspension."

Just thought I'd add that. It makes sense, although I don't know how much difference it makes....maybe little to none.
It would be cool to see a study on motors that were drained hot and cold. The world may never know. lol..

When changing the filter, I use a piece of 2" angle aluminum as a catch bin.

IDD - I saw the other thread with your pics, and have to say that is probably the #1 "why didn't I think of that" idea on this whole site. Luckily I hadn't done the first oilchange on mine before I saw it. I used a piece of Vinyl siding channel I had laying around (Just have to make sure the headers aren't hot enough to melt it.)

Yeah, that's cool. I'm still too lazy, though. I just lay a couple old rags under the filter and try to spin it off quickly. Then I wipe the header and inside fairing if I miss a couple drops. The fairing works great as a little drip catch.
Jiffy Lube has nothing on me. lol..

Exactly! I find that those T-shirts that people give me after they get back form vacation work just great for the occasion.

As a marketing guy, I ask why? Just curious.

right now the survey has a 35:2 ratio of warm/hot to cold - While it's not a huge sample, it is random, and it is a significant answer. Most of us warm our bikes up to some degree before changing the oil.

Also - if you're simply trying to figure out the temp @ whch the oil should be changed, then your survey is flawed by adding the dealer option. You gave an option that doesn't correlate to the other questions.
