Default Can I recover an engine number w/ my VIN number?

So in the state of MD they ask you for your motorcycles engine number instead of the vin number when your transferring the title. On my bike there is no engine number where its supposed to be is there anyway to recover an engine number with the vin number or am I screwed?

The engine numbers are stamped into the engine casing and aren't something that is going to come off. If it's not where it's supposed to be, then that would give me some concern. I would think that Honda would have a record of what engine went with what VIN when it was manufactured.

Thats what I thought but the flat part above the crankcase on the right side (where I'm assuming it is based off what other people have told me) is blank. Do you know any other locations for an engine number on a 929rr?

Has it been ground off? How can it be blank? I have a motor out a bike, I can look around it for another spot tomorrow.
It is supposed to be on the top of the trans next to the clutch lever.

No it doesn't look like it was ground off an if it was they did a great job making it look like it wasn't, I wish I knew how to post a pic but its just not there. Their is the place for it but no numbers are there, its just a blank rectangle. Is it a plate that is stamped on? could someone have removed the plate? Another question, can I use any engine number an say the engine was replaced? I would rather not do that but I don't understand why the VIN isn't good enough. I just spent a pretty penny on parts and quite a few hours yesterday working on it so I could finally tag and title it, I'm really hoping I can figure something out.

Its not that uncommon for some reason , I dont know why.

But I'm pretty sure a call to Honda with the VIN number can get you a valid engine number.

Any luck? I don't know why MD would ask you for an engine serial number for a title transfer. How long ago did you buy it? What state is the title you are trying to transfer from? A ground off engine serial number is usually a concern that the bike may be stolen, so I would check into it and find out what is going on.
