Buying First Bike

Buy an older bike to learn on. You will drop it (everyone drops eventually) and when you do the cash it will take to fix the new bike will be more than the price of a whole older starter bike.
The difference between an experienced rider and a noobie is the time interval between drops gets longer.
An F2 or F3 are great starter bikes, reliable as hell, and cheap as dirt.

I'd suggest buying a used bike and then upgrade later on. You'd be suprised how well you will like the F series bikes, F2,F3,F4. If you find a good enough deal, you will usually ride for free. What I mean is, you can buy one for say 2500... ride it for a few years , then when your ready to upgrade, sell it for 2500 as long as its still in good shape. There comes a point where bikes no longer loose their value, and that happens to be the F2,F3 early F4 bikes. Buy a new bike for 9-11 thousand, and its only going to be worth half that in a few years.
Personally, I bought the bike I wanted and learned on that. I was so nervous about dropping or damaging the paint... I rode too careful. I think you would be better off buying a bike you didnt care as much about. Its one less thing to worry about, and on a bike, the less worry you have, the better you can react and handle situations as they arise.
