Default Broke key in 2 pieces - help!

I locked my steering on the bike the other day, and now last night i was putting the gas cap on the tank and the key broke in 2, i need to load the bike onto my trailer so i can get it back to indy, but i have no way to unlock the steering, Lowes doesn't have the right key to remake it and they didn't even want to mess with it because its broke. does anyone know if the dealer can get a key from the vin or title? or can i just remove the lock for now to load it?

Nope, Lowes/HD/etc don't carry motorcycle keys. You need to get a licensed locksmith to make a key. My local locksmith can make just about any key for just a few bucks. Keys for my F4 & RC were a few bucks apiece. If you can get your bike to the locksmith, they can prob make a new key for you + labor on the lock mechanism for a reasonable price. If you can't get your bike to the 'smith, you can remove the mechanism & take it to the 'smith or have the 'smith come out on a service call (more cost).

If you want to get your bike home first b/f you take the lock/bike to the 'smith... You can still load it onto your trailer. Get some help & lift the front end & roll it on w/ rear wheel, strap down, done. Deal w/ lock issue at home.

As for the key-made-from-vin thing... I've never seen any dealer actually do this. Not saying it can't be done, just never actually seen it from any of the dealerships I've dealt w/ over the yrs. Most require the actual key to make a copy.

idk about new bikes, but on older jap. bikes there is a code on the lock.
you should be able to take the code to a dealer and get a new key, or look it up online.

I will check the lock for a code, thanks for the heads up, I'm going to wait till i get back in indy to call the local dealer there and see what i can do, I might buy a used set of locks since the gas tank lock is sticking and will probably break another key.

Do you still have the key? There should be a code (4 digit on my F3). The dealership can replace with the code, I believe.

I haven't looked for a code on the ignition yet, just packed it all up on the trailer - ready to haul the beast home.
