Advice needed - new tires

RE: Advice needed - new tires
Sooo while this thread is still active - heres a rookie question: What are qualities a "good" tire will have over another tire? Traction? Is that it
Any reason for me, a new rider who isnt going to be pusing his bike too hard, to pony up for some "nice" tires? Or just go with the Honda reccomended Dunlop or whatever?
Thanks for any advice.

RE: Advice needed - new tires
pay no attention to the manufacturer thing on tires. here's a few things...
1. you want a tire that best suits your needs. so if you are just commuting, then you'll one to select from the group for sport touring tires which are harder and have less stick but wear less...these are like the 207s and the diablo strada...metzler something...pilot road, etc. these will get your like 7K in mileage, at least.
if you street and canyon then you'll want to go with street/sport tire...these are pilot powers, 208s, diablos, etc...i consider the m1s more track oriented due to life but is also considered in this category.
2. you'll want to check out tire characteristics, as in how fast they warm up...of the tires listed above, diablos, metzlers and pilot powers warm up super fast...208s not so fast and not so good in cold weather. as far as the sport touring tires, i dunno, haven't used them. you'll also want to check for tire profile, tread design, etc. profile affects the lean and handling characterstics...tread design does too...and ones with grooves that are parallel with direction of travle, like the 208s, will tend to follow grooves more than ones that are more perpendicular, like the diablos. also, the flatter the profile, the more input you need to turn in...something like 208s and PP, that do not have a flatter profile, lets you turn in much easier than say...diablos...as they want to dive in the turns, but diablos are much more neutral...and i like that...
so long story short...whatever fits your means mang!

RE: Advice needed - new tires
As the folks have said there is a film on the tires because of the molding process, but also don't forget that tires are an oil based rubber so even if you do sand them there will still be oils that come to the surface until they are completely "scrubbed", which takes about 200 miles to do this all the way out to the edge of the tire. Be careful in the corners until this is done.
