Is the 520 chain conversion worth it??
I am wanting to up the gearing on my 06 CBR1000RR and am trying to decide if it is worth it to me to spend the extra money to to the 520 conversion. Is the 520 conversion really worth it to the average street rider?? Its either $70-80 bones for a good rear sprocket or $220+ for a good 520 set.
Just trying to improve starts and launches, and maybe gain a little acceleration. Stock is 42 so maybe an AFAM 44? Will the stock chain be ok with +2 on the rear??? I could go down -1 on the front for less money but I worry about what I have read about the fronts not being dampened. Is this really an issue? Plus, if I do the back, I can get ride of the ugly stock steel.
If someone convinces me that the 520 is worth it, what brand and model chain? Good source to buy? Remember, I am street riding. Maybe in the future some track days, but nothing too serious.
Thanks
Roach

i say stick with stock chain size and just do the sprockets.
the 520 part isn't what you feel the most (just what you feel most in your pocket)...it'll be the re-gear. try it out...bet you won't be able to tell much.

i agree. stick with the 530 and just regear it. If you buy a 520 kit and keep the gearing the same as it is now, you won't know the difference and you'll kick yourself in the nuts for blowing so much money on it. just regear.
Thanks guys. Just confirms my thinking. I will skip the 520 this time around and the money I save with just the rear sprocket will get me some other goodies to add to the order.
So +2 up on the rear of the 06 is ok? Stock chain length ok?
Thanks Again

the reason i did it was because the chain my bike had on it when i bought it was a p.o.s as were the gears, i found a +1,+2 520 RK/vortex kit for $150 on ebay...of course the chain is stronger but the acceleration kit sure is nice onthe little 900rr...for you it is probably a waste of cabbage..
It isn't always a good idea to change sprockets w/o changing the chain to. A worn out chain will wear out new sprockets really quickly and vice versa. Wait till you have to replace the stuff then regear.
