Default 2 out of 4 Cylinders not firing on a 2001 929rr

Thank for taking the time to read this! I more than appreciate your feedback. I recently picked up a 2001 929 from a buddy that had been sitting for about 5 years. I’m going to try to explain everything I can about the bike and my situation. I have very little mechanical experience and definitely don’t know the proper terminology so bare with me . The bike sat for at least five years without being run at all. It has a little over 10,000 miles on it when I first got the bike I cleaned out all the fuel lines, injectors and used a electrical cleaner i got at a local auto place to spray all the connections. First time I tried to start the bike it didn’t want to start but was trying after spraying little bit of starting fluid in throttle bodies (think that’s what you call them) the bike started right up. It definitely has compression in all cylinders and all four spark plugs Firing off. Since then I went and got a new battery, NGK I radium spark plugs for it and sea foam to put into the gas tank in hopes to run through it. I thought maybe if I ran the bike the sea foam would fix the problem with the cyclinders not firing but that just ended up being dumbed In and mixing with the oil from me riding it a couple miles. I did replace the fuel line because the old one was totally shot and I bought the heaviest duty fuel line I could buy an used hose clamps to fasten it actually the first one I tried using when the fuel injector would kick on and it actually would collapse the line so I ended up pulling one off of an old pick up truck and now that seems to be working fine. One thing I noticed when I took the spark plugs out to check them the two cylinders that aren’t firing those spark plugs definitely weren’t dry by any means but you could tell a big difference between the two that were firing. I’ve tried changing The coil packs around to see if that was maybe the issue but didn’t make a difference. I understand how the fuels ending up mixed in with the oil from the two cylinders not firing I just have no idea what’s causing them not to fire

Have you tried changing the plugs around to see if that makes any difference? (Long shot)

not sure if I’m replying the way I’m supposed to be anyway the guy I got the bike from had bought 4 new cheap auto light spark plugs for it and I had them but didn’t want to use them so I got the NGK I radium unplugs. Being that I had The two sets I’ve tried switching them out but it didn’t make a difference. I’m starting to wonder if it’s not an issue with the fuel injectors or wiring going to them. I’ve checked them all with a battery and they all click but I was told and I don’t know if this is accurate or not that they can still malfunction…. maybe that could be the reason there is so much fuel getting ending up in with the oil.

You need to check the fuel pressure regulator on the left side of the fuel rail. It will have a rubber hose connected to it. Prop up the gas tank and remove the hose. Now turn on the key and see if fuel drips from it. When the FPR is bad it dumps excess fuel into the vacuum line which goes to cylinders 1&4. Bad FPR is the most common issue to cause gas to mix with oil in the crankcase. The video below is on 954 which is the same FPR setup as your 929.

Using the cheaper spark plugs will not cause any issues. Get a spray bottle filled with water and mist the water on the header tubes after the bike has been running for a minute or two. If the cylinder is firing normal the water will evaporate fast. If the water runs down the header or is so to evaporate something is going on the that cylinder. Post a pic of the spark plugs in order 1(left)-4(right)

Thanks for the info that was definitely the problem 100%. Now the issue I’m having is my fuel pump stopped working and I tested that hooking it up to the battery and it kicks on it just won’t turn on when I turn the key. I’m getting Power to the plug where the fuel pump plugs in and I tried switching the relays around so I know it’s not that. You can hear and feel it klick in the relay when I hit the engine kill switch. Any advice on that would greatly be appreciated

Might have a problem inside the right bar switch. Does the headlight come on when you turn on the key? Did you check all the fuses?
